Download or read book Identity Ritual and State in Tibetan Buddhism written by Martin A. Mills and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major anthropological study of contemporary Tibetan Buddhist monasticism and tantric ritual in the Ladakh region of North-West India and of the role of tantric ritual in the formation and maintenance of traditional forms of state structure and political consciousness in Tibet. Containing detailed descriptions and analyses of monastic ritual, the work builds up a picture of Tibetan tantric traditions as they interact with more localised understandings of bodily identity and territorial cosmology, to produce a substantial re-interpretation of the place of monks as ritual performers and peripheral householders in Ladakh. The work also examines the central and indispensable role of incarnate lamas, such as the Dalai Lama, in the religious life of Tibetan Buddhists.

Book excerpt: Ladakh is a wonderland of mesmerising, sweeping vistas. With its barren, rugged mountains, crystal clear skies and inspiring visions of a lost Shangri-La, Ladakh is a very special place. Beyond the Himalaya, on the edge of Tibet, it is a hidden paradise for trekkers, tourists and travellers. Above all, Ladakh is a unique land in which to visit and explore what remains of the Tibetan Buddhist culture. Soaring to the sky and clustered around jagged crags are intriguing, fairytale monasteries. Such places still reverberate with the sound of chanting monks, eerie chambers of silent devotions and the haunting tones of long horns, often heard at the many festivals. This book aims to fill the void between casual observation and further knowledge. The fascinating world of Himalayan Buddhist culture can be observed right here, among the magical monasteries of Ladakh. * geography and history of the region * cultural and religious background * monastery plans and maps * details of the Buddhist deities * illustrated with black and white photographs

Download or read book Ladakh written by David Vaala and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of five years, photographer David Vaala embedded himself in Ladakh, a mountainous corner of Northwestern India, to capture "Little Tibet": its landscapes, culture, and people. More than 150 full-color, large-format images focus on the rare cham dances, masked dance-dramas, which are a unique aspect of Tibetan Buddhism. Using a make-shift studio, Vaala documented these brief annual ceremonies that narrate the story of Buddhism's spread into Tibetan culture. The images immortalize the cham ceremonies with detailed portraits of individual cham characters from each of the four traditions of Tibetan Buddhism as practiced in Ladakh. Further celebrating this isolated region are spectacular landscapes that feature Ladakh's terrain, nestled between two great mountain ranges, the Himalayas and the Karakoram. Portraits reveal its nomadic people in intimate detail. This book is ideal for those interested in photography, anthropology, world travel, and Tibetan Buddhism and culture.
