Book excerpt: This collection of papers is dedicated to Herman Brijder upon his retirement from the University of Amsterdam. He is a renowned scholar in the field of Greek ancient pottery and his research is mainly concentrated on the so-called Siana cups, made in the middle of the 6th century BC at Athens. Twenty three colleagues, among which former students, wrote articles on diverse aspects of Greek pottery of the 6th and 5th centuries BC, especially on vases produced at Athens. Various contributions have been presented during a round table in Brijder's former working environment, the Allard Pierson Museum at Amsterdam. Subjects include the iconography of mythical figures, the depiction of animals, means of transport, the shapes of drinking vessels and the distribution of Athenian pottery in the Mediterranean. A few essays deal with related topics. As a whole, the volume is a representative overview of themes that matter in modern research of ancient Greek pottery.

Book The Regional Production of Red Figure Pottery

Download or read book The Regional Production of Red Figure Pottery written by Stine Schierup and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the latter part of the fifth century BC, regional red-figure productions were established outside Attica in regional Greece and in the western Mediterranean, propelled by the impact of the art of Attic vase painting. This collection of papers addresses key issues posed by these production centres. Why did they emerge? To what degree was their inception prompted by the emigration of Attic craftsmen in the context of the weakened Attic pottery market at the onset of the Peloponnesian War? How did Attic vase painting influence already existing traditions, and what was selected, adopted or adapted at the receiving end? Who was using red-figure in mainland Greece and Italy, and what were its particular functions in the local cultures? These and more questions are addressed here with the presentation not only of syntheses, but also primary publication of much newly discovered material. Regional production centres covered include those of Euboea, Boeotia, Corinth, Laconia, Macedonia, Ambracia, Lucania, Apulia, Sicily, Locri and Etruria.

Book Religious Convergence in the Ancient Mediterranean

Download or read book Religious Convergence in the Ancient Mediterranean written by Sandra Blakely and published by Lockwood Press. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together scholars in religion, archaeology, philology, and history to explore case studies and theoretical models of converging religions. The twenty-four essays offered in this volume, which derive from Hittite, Cilician, Lydian, Phoenician, Greek, and Roman cultural settings, focus on encounters at the boundaries of cultures, landscapes, chronologies, social class and status, the imaginary, and the materially operative. Broad patterns ultimately emerge that reach across these boundaries, and suggest the state of the question on the study of convergence, and the potential fruitfulness for comparative and interdisciplinary studies as models continue to evolve.

Book The Laconia Survey Methodology and interpretation

Download or read book The Laconia Survey Methodology and interpretation written by William G. Cavanagh and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This intensive, full-coverage survey was conducted by the Universities of Nottingham and Amsterdam in conjunction with the British School at Athens between 1983 and 1988. It covered a territory of just over 70 sq km in central Laconia, extending from the east side of the River Evrotas, close to Sparta, up into the foothills of the Parnon range. The Survey identified over 400 sites, the great majority of them previously unknown, dating variously to the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and Veneto-Turkish periods. The new information makes possible a re-evaluation of the settlement history and rural economy of Sparta and Laconia. This is presented in Volume I, in which the ecology and geomorphology of the region set the scene for period by period analyses of the results and implications of the Survey. Volume II assembles the primary data, including a pottery series for each period and separate studies of chipped and ground-stone artefacts, inscriptions, architectural fragments, other finds, and the results of geophysical survey. The site catalogue is complemented by a new gazetteer of archaeological sites in the rest of Laconia. Vol I - Methodology and Interpretation. Chapters cover the survey methodology (Cavanagh, Shipley, Crouwel), soils (Fiselier, van Berghem), historical ecology (Rackham), prehistory (Cavanagh, Crouwel), the archaic-classical period (Catling), the Hellenistic-Roman (Shipley), the Byzantine-Ottoman (Armstrong), and modern settlements (Wagstaff).

Book Patterns of Imports in Iron Age Italy

Download or read book Patterns of Imports in Iron Age Italy written by R. N. Fletcher and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2007 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Early Iron Age and the Archaic period, the central Mediterranean was the scene of revolutionary changes and rapid development within the various cultural entities of Italy, Sardinia, and Sicily. It was this region that saw Greek settlement in South Italy and Sicily, Phoenician colonization in Sicily and Sardinia, and the beginnings of trade and contact between the cultures of the region and those of the East, with a subsequent exchange of technology, material, and ideas. The purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, it centres upon a database of imported material in the Italian peninsula, Sardinia, and Sicily dating from approximately 800 to 500 BC, which has been constructed in order to study trade in this region. The database upon which this work is founded stands at a little over 50,000 objects. Making a database of imported objects into the central Mediterranean region, and undertaking a study of the methodology dealing with the statistical problems of such an endeavour, is an attempt to rectify a few of the shortcomings of past scholarship. It is the basis for a re-examination of the problem of the beginnings of trade and contact. The second major intention of this study reflects the necessity to ensure that applied theory remains embedded in data, and the potential for Iron Age and Archaic data, if handled appropriately, to form a fertile theoretical bed. The primary purpose of this work is to expand the range, the transparency and the flexibility of data not only for the short-term reason of admitting new questions, but also with the longer view of strengthening the soundness of applied theory in this field. Over and above the evaluation of current ideas and the illumination of new ones, this study is an open demonstration of the utility of databases of archaeological material as a tool for further research.
