Book Labour Market Planning Revisited

Download or read book Labour Market Planning Revisited written by M. Hopkins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-09-05 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book enables the reader to understand labour markets and shows how to forecast the need for skills in developing countries. The forecasting of these skills has recently fallen into disrepute with the notion that all forecasting techniques that assessed the labour market requirements of the future were dubious and that the future lay with labour market analysis and labour market signalling. This book disputes this but acknowledges that the models of the past should be supplemented with better data and improved labour market analysis and in doing so produces its own model for analysing the needs of labour markets.

Book Adjustment Policies for Trade sensitive Industries

Download or read book Adjustment Policies for Trade sensitive Industries written by Economic Council of Canada and published by The Council. This book was released on 1988 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The postwar period has been marked by significant liberalization and expansion of world trade. However, this growth and liberalization have not been without problems. One problem has been difficulties experienced by workers, firms, industries, regions, and/or governments in adjusting to increased openness to trade. This report directs its attention to this adjustment, supplying nine principles in the form of recommendations to guide governments in developing policies for trade-sensitive industries. These are supplemented by a number of suggestions for improvements in existing labour adjustment programs.

Download or read book Harvesting Labour written by Edward Dunsworth and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades an increasing share of Canada’s agricultural workforce has been made up of temporary foreign workers from the Global South. These labourers work difficult and dangerous jobs with limited legal protections and are effectively barred from permanent settlement in Canada. In Harvesting Labour Edward Dunsworth examines the history of farm work in one of Canada’s underrecognized but most important crop sectors – Ontario tobacco. Dunsworth takes aim at the idea that temporary foreign worker programs emerged in response to labour shortages or the unwillingness of Canadians to work in agriculture. To the contrary, Ontario’s tobacco sector was extremely popular with workers for much of the twentieth century, with high wages attracting a diverse workforce and enabling thousands to establish themselves as small farm owners. By the end of the century, however, the sector had become something entirely different: a handful of mega-farms relying on foreign guest workers to produce their crops. Taking readers from the leafy fields of Ontario’s tobacco belt to rural Jamaica, Barbados, and North Carolina and on to the halls of government, Dunsworth demonstrates how the ultimate transformation of tobacco – and Canadian agriculture writ large – was fundamentally a function of the capitalist restructuring of farming. Harvesting Labour brings together the fields of labour, migration, and business history to reinterpret the historical origins of contemporary Canadian agriculture and its workforce.

Book Policy Analysis in Canada

Download or read book Policy Analysis in Canada written by Laurent Dobuzinskis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth of what some academics refer to as 'the policy analysis movement' represents an effort to reform certain aspects of government behaviour. The policy analysis movement is the result of efforts made by actors inside and outside formal political decision-making processes to improve policy outcomes by applying systematic evaluative rationality to the development and implementation of policy options. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of the many ways in which the policy analysis movement has been conducted, and to what effect, in Canadian governments and, for the first time, in business associations, labour unions, universities, and other non-governmental organizations. Editors Laurent Dobuzinskis, Michael Howlett, and David Laycock have brought together a wide range of contributors to address questions such as: What do policy analysts do? What techniques and approaches do they use? What is their influence on policy-making in Canada? Is there a policy analysis deficit? What norms and values guide the work done by policy analysts working in different institutional settings? Contributors focus on the sociology of policy analysis, demonstrating how analysts working in different organizations tend to have different interests and to utilize different techniques. They compare and analyze the significance of these different styles and approaches, and speculate about their impact on the policy process.

Book excerpt: Despite the wide range they come from, many of the papers in this book emphasize the radical changes concerning flexible practices and policies spreading worldwide and point to neo-liberal globalization, emerged as a solution to the crisis of capitalism in the 1970s, as one of the most important sources of these processes. We think that it is possible to display the dynamics of this transformation concerning flexibility and to develop alternative policies and practices across the world, as the papers in this collection attempt to do. So, we hope that, this would provide significant contribution to solving the problems caused by flexible practices and policies.

Book Economics of the Labour Market

Download or read book Economics of the Labour Market written by P. N. (Raja) Junankar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-12 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global crisis has led to dramatic increases in unemployment rates over most of the countries of the OECD. This book provides alternative explanations of this phenomenon. Junankar begins with surveys of the labour market: labour demand, labour supply, and labour force participation. He argues that the growth of unemployment and long-term unemployment is mainly due to a lack of aggregated demand and not due to high unemployment benefits. Economics of the Labour Market shows that unemployment and long-term unemployment impose serious and significant costs on individuals, families, and society in general. Raja Junankar focuses on vital social issues arising from the malfunctioning of economies and this collection of essays tackles the real cost of unemployment.
