Book The Happiness of Young Australians

Download or read book The Happiness of Young Australians written by Alfred Michael Dockery and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth are used to investigate factors that influence young Australians' self-reported levels of 'happiness' during the school-to-work transition, focusing on the role of labour market experience. Panel logit models are fitted to control for individual effects. Fixed individual personality traits and marital status strongly influence reported happiness. There is evidence of declining well-being with duration of unemployment and of the importance of job quality, rather than just having a job. The validity of Clark and Oswald's (1994) assertion that empirical findings from happiness research show that unemployment is involuntary is questioned.

In the context of increasing youth labour market participation rates and debates about the value of early employment, it draws on multi-level analyses to reflect the complexity of the field. Each of the three sections of the book explores a key aspect of young people's employment: their experience of work, intersections between work and education, and the impact of other actors and institutions. Book The Transition to Full time Work of Young People who Do Not Go to University

Download or read book The Transition to Full time Work of Young People who Do Not Go to University written by Gary N. Marks and published by Acer Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the transition to full-time employment of young people who do not go to university. The majority of Australiaâs school leavers do not enrol in university, and it is important to better understand the pathways that they follow. The report uses a substantial longitudinal dataset to map the dynamics of the youth labour market, and identify the factors that are important in securing full- time work. The group analysed were part of a national sample of 13,613 young people who were first surveyed in Year 9 in 1995. The report follows them through to 2002 when their average age was 21 and they had been out of school for between four and six years. The study reports on their main education and labour market activities in each year since leaving school. It then analyses the influences of social and demographic factors, school and other educational factors, and initial experiences in the labour market on their post-school activity four years after leaving school. The particular focus is on the factors that influence being in full-time employment four years after leaving school. Separate analyses were performed for males and females as their post-school experiences differ in a number of ways.

Book Reducing the Risk

Download or read book Reducing the Risk written by Australian Institute of Multicultural Affairs and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 7-chapter report reviews unemployment among migrant and refugee youth in Australia, examines the employment and training programs that exist for this population, identifies unmet needs, and suggests programs or services to meet those needs. An overview of the labor market programs and services available is contained in Chapter 2. Chapters 1 and 3 examine the extent of unemployment among overseas-born youth and explore the factors which influence their prospects in comparison with Australian born youth. Chapters 4 and 5 present evidence of program utilization by migrant youth. Chapter 6 examines the suitability of programs for overcoming the disadvantages of immigrant youth in seeking employment. The recommendations in the report's final chapter hinge on increasing migrant youths' utilization of resources, and involve four broad levels of improvement: (1) adjustments to the eligibility provisions for programs; (2) attention to procedures in program administration so as to assist those in greatest need; (3) adjustments to programs in order to enhance their suitability for a specific group; and (4) changes in the coordination and evaluation of programs and services. Appendices include program summaries, an overview of education and programs, and statistical information relating to the methodology and findings of the review. (CG)

Book From Education to Employment

Download or read book From Education to Employment written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the time it takes young Australians to obtain their first job after they complete their education. This is an important issue because the first experiences of young people entering the labour market may affect their future labour market successes or failures. The unique information contained in the employment calendar of the 1995 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) is used to estimate the factors associated with the length of time between completing education and commencing work. The report employed multivariate regression analysis to estimate the duration between completing education and obtaining work using the method of piecewise constant hazards. This method is known to be particularly powerful and robust for handling data that may be problematic in ways that are not clearly known, or which cannot be explicitly modelled even when known. These regression methods are called flexible or semi-parametric. - p.7.

Book The Labour Market Ate My Babies

Download or read book The Labour Market Ate My Babies written by Barbara Pocock and published by Federation Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listed in top 50 Management Books for 2006 in the Australian Financial Review BOSS magazine, January 2007, Volume 8.In The Labour Market Ate My Babies Barbara Pocock, acclaimed author of The Work/Life Collision, examines the impact of modern working life on our children. In this book, young Australians from all over the country, city and the bush, rich and poor, talk about the good and bad of parental work - the trade off between money and time, consumer riches versus time for each other. Pocock argues that the modern labour market is having a huge impact on today's youth and eating into our capacity to care. Children have become a 'market'. Caring for kids and selling to kids is big business, as stressed, time-poor parents struggle to care for their children and salve their guilt with presents and pocket money. How will this future generation of workers weigh up the labour market and organise their lives? The Labour Market Ate My Babies argues that a sustainable future requires new policy approaches to work that incorporate the perspectives of children. We should:ensure that parents get the time they need away from work when they need it help parents get a good fit between how they want to work, and how they have to provide quality, low cost, public childcare options stop advertising to kids in ways that stimulate an early work/spend cycle. It's good to get money coming in and probably it's good to work as hard as you can when you're younger so when you're older you can retire with some money. But there should probably be a limit to how much before your relationships with other people start to strain because you are never there (Adam, 16)

Book Young People in the Labour Market

Download or read book Young People in the Labour Market written by Andy Furlong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Levels of suffering among young people have always been much higher than governments suggest. Indeed, policies aimed at young workers have often been framed in ways that help secure conformity to a new employment landscape in which traditional securities have been progressively removed. Increasingly punitive welfare regimes have resulted in new hardships, especially among young women and those living in depressed labour markets. Framed by the ideas of Norbert Elias, Young People in the Labour Market challenges the idea that changing economic landscapes have given birth to a ‘Precariat’ and argues that labour insecurity is more deep-rooted and complex than others have suggested. Focusing on young people and the ways in which their working lives have changed between the 1980s recession and the Great Recession of 2008/2009 and its immediate aftermath, the book begins by drawing attention to trends already emerging in the preceding two decades. Drawing on data originally collected during the 1980s recession and comparing it to contemporary data drawn from the UK Household Longitudinal Study, the book explores the ways in which young people have adjusted to the changes, arguing that life satisfaction and optimism are linked to labour market conditions. A timely volume, this book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers who are interested in fields such as Sociology, Social Policy, Management and Youth Studies.
