Building on previous collaboration in the area of industrial relations law, the authors sought to explore, through comparative study, some of the problems encountered by the legal systems of Britain and Sweden in the areas of housing, consumer affairs and employment. contractual relationships, especially where that protection was seen to be particularly relevant. The idea was not only to make comparisons between the systems of the two countries but also to compare the various fields covered by the project. It was hoped that this would add a new dimension to the classical comparative law approach and allow more fruitful discussion of methods of protection and policy issues. public policy, as well as significant developments in the law, brought new issues to the fore which called for special consideration. The resulting modifications in the original design are apparent in the final two volumes of the series, which address changes in Britain and Sweden during the 1980s. These have caused the two countries - which could once have been described as Welfare States - to drift further apart in that respect. Nowhere is this more evident than in the regulation of labour relations, although during the course of the decade striking differences also emerged in housing law.

In terms of influential comparative typologies or models (naturally 'flawed' by a certain element of vagueness and simplification, but also very helpful in analytical and pedagogical respects), Sweden has been described as a representative of, inter alia, a Nordic legal family, a Nordic labour law model, a social-collectivist industrial relations system, a consensual industrial relations system, a social-democratic welfare state regime, a Scandinavian social security law system (a 'sub-group' of the Beveridge system), and a coordinated market economy. But since 1995 EU law and European law perspectives have been extensively integrated into existing Swedish labour and social security law, and the chapters in this book go a long way in illustrating the far-reaching and multifaceted ways in which Swedish law has been 'Europeanised'.
