Book excerpt: Diantipyrylmethane having an absorption maximum at 380 nm forms an intensely coloured complex with TiO2. Diantipyrylmethane has been used to determine low concentrations of titanium (0.2 to 3.2 per cent TiO2) in niobium and tantalum ores and in silicate minerals with a coefficient of variation of 2 per cent at a concentration level of 1.8 per cent TiO2. The sample is taken into solution by one of two methods. The first method is the fusion of the sample with potassium pyrosulphate followed by leaching with sulphuric acid. The second method is to attack the sample with hydrofluoric and sulphuric acids and evaporate it to dryness. The residue is then fused with potassium pyrosulphate, and leached with a 10% w/v citric acid solution. An aliquot portion of the leach solution is first treated with ascorbic acid to prevent interference from Fe3+, Mo6+, and V5+, after which the diantipyrylmethane is added, and the solution allowed to stand overnight before measuring the optical density. Interferences from niobium and tantalum ions are avoided by working in a citric acid medium. Silica must be removed from silica-bearing minerals before titanium is determined. Up to 800 ug of SnO or U3O8 can be tolerated in the final sample solution.

After fuming with sulphuric acid to eliminate the nitrate and fluoride ions, titanium thiocyanate is formed by the addition of ammonium thiocyanate, and the complex is extracted into tri-n-octylphosphine oxide. The transmittance of the resulting yellow solution is a measure of the titanium concentration.
