Book European Union Research Policy

Download or read book European Union Research Policy written by Veera Mitzner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the emergence of research policy as a key competence of the European Union (EU). It shows how the European Community (EC, the predecessor of the EU), which initially had very limited legal competence in the field, progressively developed a solid policy framework presenting science and research as indispensable tools for European economic competitiveness and growth. In the late 20th century Western Europe, hungry for growth, concerned about the American technological lead, and keen to compete in the increasingly open international markets, the argument for a joint European effort in science and technology seemed plausible. However, the EC was building its new functions in an already crowded field of European research collaboration and in a shifting political context marked by austerity, national rivalries, new societal and environmental challenges, and emerging ambivalence about science. This book conveys the contested history of one of the EU’s most successful policies. It is a story of struggle and frustration but also of a great institutional and intellectual continuity. The ideational edifice for the EC/EU research policy that was put in place during the 1960s and 1970s years proved remarkably robust. Its durability enabled the rapid takeoff of the European Commission’s initiatives in the more favorable political atmosphere of the early 1980s and the subsequent expansion of the EU research funding instruments and programs that permanently transformed the European research landscape.

Book Interregionalism and the European Union

Download or read book Interregionalism and the European Union written by Mario Telò and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the EU isolated within the emergent multipolar world? Concentrating on interregional relations and focussing on the European Union’s (EU) evolving international role with regards to regional cooperation, this innovative book collects a set of fresh empirical analyses of interregional ties binding the EU with its Eastern and Southern neighbourhood, as well as with Asia, Africa and the Americas. The 25 leading authors from 5 continents have contributed original and diverse chapters and the book advances a novel theoretical ‘post-revisionist’ approach beyond both the Eurocentrism of ‘Europe First’ perspectives as well as the Euroscepticism of those advocating to simply move ’Beyond Europe’. After a Foreword by A. Acharya, the book’s five sections reflect the main drivers of EU interregional policies: The European Union as a Sophisticated Laboratory of Regional and Interregional Cooperation (with chapters by M. Telò, L. Fawcett and T. Risse), De Facto Drivers of Regionalism (F. Ponjaert, M. Shu, A. Valladão and C. Jakobeit), De Jure Drivers of Regionalism (S. Lavenex, G. Finizio, C. Jakobeit, R. Coman, C. Cocq & S. Teo L-Shah), Cognitive Drivers of Regionalism (J. Rüland, E. Fitriani, S. Stavridis & S. Kingah, P. Bacon), and Instrumental Drivers of Regionalism (B. Delcourt, C. Olsson & G. Müller, A. Malamud & P. Seabra and L. Fioramonti & J. Kostopoulos).

Book Knowledge Communities in Europe

Download or read book Knowledge Communities in Europe written by Bertold Schweitzer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication presents research results on a multitude of knowledge exchange processes in post-enlightenment Europe. These focus on the question in how far deeply rooted processes of knowledge exchange by transnational intellectual discourses and international expert communities have contributed to a variety of networks of European intellectual identities and research practices. These practices again constitute a fertile framework for de-territorialised and de-nationalised exchange of knowledge that might contribute to contagious processes of emancipation, cooperation as well as problem solving.

Book Convergence Cohesion and Integration in the European Union

Download or read book Convergence Cohesion and Integration in the European Union written by R. Leonardi and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-01-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convergence, Cohesion and Integration in the European Union tackles the fundamental theoretical and empirical issues underlying the process of European integration. Two basic arguments underlie the book. The first is that economic convergence in postwar Europe has reduced the disparities between regions and that this has been an important accelerator of the drive for integration. The second is that, in contrast to the situation before 1985 when nation states dominated the move to integration, grass roots pressure has been the dominant force since the Single European Act and the preparation for the single market.

Download or read book European Integration written by Jaap Hage and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a range of perspectives on European integration from different scientific disciplines. It aims to give its readers the opportunity to look at European integration from various scientific angles, such as history, political science, philosophy of science, economics, legal theory, social ontology, and evolutionary psychology. By bringing together these disciplines, European Integration: A Theme hopes to contribute to the education of scientists who are able to place topics like European integration in a wider context and consider it from numerous perspectives. European Integration: A Theme takes this approach because European integration is a topic that can be given content from these several angles and about which several scientific disciplines have something to say. Also - and more importantly - it takes this approach because in an increasingly globalized and complex world, it is important to educate scientists who are able to address these complexities from more than one perspective.

Book The Life Sciences in European Union Law

Download or read book The Life Sciences in European Union Law written by Sophie Bisson and published by . This book was released on 2017-09-24 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In just a few decades the life sciences sector has witnessed considerable advances that have made 'life' accessible, tangible, and available for use in increasingly diversified forms, for ever more sophisticated applications in the research and development context or outside the laboratory. Whether they went out the lab door a long time ago or not, these various forms now share the particularity of being handled, transformed or otherwise valued in highly regulated environments; a common feature deserving consideration in the light of European Union law since many of its rules in the sector have themselves proven malleable enough to embrace both the multi-faceted, transnational challenges of technological change and its huge potential. The present book endeavours to explain how, and to what extent, the European integration process has been, and still is, able to provide a flexible basis for overcoming these challenges in a multi-level system of governance. With a vision resolutely turned toward the future, it also leaves space for reflection about the possible paths European lawyers could take in what is now a technologically open world. This book is intended for lawyers who are specialising in EU law and in international law, or who wish to open up new horizons in their respective fields of specialisation. It could be of particular interest to the younger generations of lawyers, to which the author herself belongs. It is also aimed at all scientific students, life scientists and any other persons who are already familiar with the intricacies of EU law.
