Book A Laboratory Course in Physics for Secondary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Course in Physics for Secondary Schools Classic Reprint written by Robert Andrews Millikan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Course in Physics for Secondary Schools Since the precise method of accomplishing this end will depend upon the sort of laboratory equip ment which is available, the course has been given considerable flexibility by introducing alternative experiments. Thus, if gas is not accessible the student will omit Exp. 5, but will get exactly the same principle through performing Exp. 5a. Or, if the laboratory is not equipped with commercial ammeters and voltmeters, Exp. 31 will be omitted and Exp. 31 A performed. Similar choices will be found indicated throughout the text. Another feature of the course is that the experiments do not presuppose any previous study of the subject involved, or any antecedent knowledge of physics. The laboratory work may be kept in advance of the classroom discussion throughout the entire course if desired. Indeed, in their own elementary work the authors prefer to let more than half of the experiments constitute the student's first introduction to the subject treated. Furthermore, students are neither instructed nor advised to study their experiments before entering the laboratory, for each experiment has been arranged to carry with it its own introduction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Physics: For Use in Secondary Schools Tms Manual is a laboratory guide for the student.' While primarily planned to be used in connection with the author's Text-book of Physics with which it is closely correlated, it can be used with any other text or even with no text at all, as the discussions and explanations which it contains, when supplemented by the oral instruction of a live teacher, render the book independent of any text-book aid. Only such experiments are included as can be performed by large classes with a minimum tax on a teacher's time and energy. The number of experiments is large enough to permit some variation of work from year to year and to allow considerable latitude of choice. An equitable pro portion of quantitative and qualitative experiments has been maintained throughout the course. Book Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics

Download or read book Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics written by Franklin H. Ayres and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics: A Manual for Students in Academies and High Schools This little work is, as its name implies, simply a manual of exercises in elementary physics. No claim is made that it embraces all the exercises suitable for work of this grade. It is believed, however, that the exercises as herein presented constitute a sound basis for a strong, rational, and flexible course in elementary laboratory physics. There has been no attempt in this book to usurp the functions of the teacher. Much of the details of the work are most effective when they come directly from him. The inspiration must also come, in large measure, from the instructor; no book can take his place in this particular. In handling laboratory work in physics of any grade, the instructor is confronted at all times with the serious problem of providing apparatus. This problem is all the more serious in view of the fact that good work, even in elementary physics, is quite impossible without reasonably good apparatus. Speaking to this very point, Professor Nichols has said: "The list of instruments essential to the carrying on of an effective course in laboratory physics is not a large one. It includes certain standard apparatus, such as the balance, the air-pump, the thermometer, the projecting lantern, the electrical machine, and the galvanometer; together with such accessories as are necessary to use with these instruments. Without such an equipment, no college or school should attempt to give instruction in physics." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Physical Laboratory Manual for Secondary Schools

Download or read book Physical Laboratory Manual for Secondary Schools written by Charles F. Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual for Secondary Schools: Revised Edition After twenty years of experience in the physical labora tory with large classes the author presents these exercises, which have been thoroughly tested in his own classes and in other schools, with a firm belief that a course can be selected from them which will be both instructive and interesting to the pupil. The methods and apparatus described Will give good results in the hands of pupils. The number of exercises is sufficiently large to allow considerable latitude of choice. The small school with a limited equipment or the large school with abundance of means can find suitable material for a laboratory course of one year. A few exercises are given which are suited for a little more advanced work which some may wish to give. The number of exercises also permits some varia tion of the work from year to year and gives room for development in the small school as its equipment in creases. Book Physical Laboratory Manual

Download or read book Physical Laboratory Manual written by S. E. Coleman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual: For Secondary Schools The number and variety of laboratory manuals in physics now on the market are so large that the merits of a new one are hardly to be sought in novelty of content, but rather in the utility of the material chosen from the abundant common store and in the method of presenting it. Believing that these are both matters Of great importance and that the possibilities of improvement in them have not yet been exhausted, the author has written this manual in the hope that it will con tribute toward this end. Since both the choice of material and the method of treat ment are in a large measure determined by the view enter tained in regard to the place and function of the laboratory work in the course in physics, a brief statement on this point seems desirable. Rejecting the extreme view that little im portance is to be attached to any part of the work except the laboratory course, as well as the opposite extreme which rele gates this part of the work to the position of a supplementary adjunct to the old form of text-book instruction, the author has adopted in his teaching and has assumed as the controlling principle in the preparation of this manual the View that the laboratory course should stand in coordinate relationship to the work of the class room; which, in his opinion, should include as important elements qualitative experimental work by the teacher, the systematic study of a good text-book, as large a use of reference books as time and opportunity permit, a constant appeal to the everyday experience of the pupils, and, finally, the recitation or quiz, in which the information gleaned from the several sources is classified, organized into scientific knowledge, and assimilated. Book Physical Laboratory Manual

Download or read book Physical Laboratory Manual written by Charles F. Adams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Laboratory Manual: For Secondary Schools and Colleges This manual is the outgrowth of several years of experience with pupils in the physical laboratory as well as of a study of the growth and development of laboratory work in secondary schools. The development of the work in my own hands has been attended with an elimination of qualitative exercises, or illustrative experiments, and a reduction of the number of exercises at first attempted. My experience and study lead me to believe that the best results are attained by comparatively few exercises, the greater part of them being quantitative in character. Quality of work, rather than quantity, should receive the most consideration. The tendency in my own work has been to strive after greater accuracy from year to year. To allow pupils to do quantitative exercises in a careless manner, with small regard for accuracy, is to do them an injury. Under these circumstances a quantitative exercise ceases to be such and becomes qualitative; and, moreover, it is a pretense and a sham. The position here taken as to number and kind of exercises is, I believe, in accord with the best thought and practice of the time. In support of this it is necessary only to mention the report of the Physical Conference to "The Committee of Ten." In the selection of experiments and methods of procedure great care has been taken to adopt only those that are capable of giving results of a considerable degree of accuracy in the hands of pupils. Download or read book Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics Classic Reprint written by Charles R. Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Elementary Physics The book is made up mainly Of the author's instructions to his own pupils for their laboratory work. The course of which this forms a part includes also the performance of all necessary descriptive experiments before the class, and the use of a text-book. Before the pupil goes to work in the laboratory at all, he-should be given a general idea of how knowledge is acquired experimentally, and the steps involved in carrying on an experimental investigation. The instruction on these points should be illustrated by some simple typical experiments by the teacher. After wards the relative order Of text-book and laboratory work will naturally depend upon the nature of the laboratory exercises. In exercises involving the study of conditions, as in those on Magnetism, and some of those on Electricity and Heat, the author prefers that the laboratory work pre cede the text-book work; but in exercises involving definite measurement, as in Specific Gravity and Specific Heat, this order may well be reversed. Certainly, in the determina tion of a physical law by measurements of two values, as in the exercises on Elasticity or on the Pendulum, the labora tory work should come first.
