Book excerpt: A laboratory evaluation of a shipboard Phase II multifunctional waste incinerator (MFI), consisting of testing the unit for a minimum of 1200 operational hr to characterize performance, reliability, maintainability, habitability, and safety, demonstrated that the solid waste processing requirements are acceptable for various wastes with a 98-percent average reduction efficiency on a weight basis. Additionally, freshwater sewage and waste oil can be processed on demand at the required flow rates. All wastes can be processed with an average operator attention time of less than 5 min/hr. Recommendations for certain deficiencies include provisions for extra insulation and safety guards, development of an adequate technical manual, and optimization of feed and fuel processing systems. Upon completion of the recommended modifications, further testing, including a vibration evaluation, will complete the requirements prior to installation of the MFI on board a naval vessel for shipboard evaluations and approval for service use. Book excerpt: This report describes vibrational testing and identifies recommended changes to a multifunctional waste incinerator (MFI) intended for use on seagoing vessels as an alternative for overboard discharge of potentially harmful waste. The testing reported completes the third part of Phase II testing, laboratory evaluation of a land-based system. Vibrational testing was completed on both 0 degs. and 90 degs. transverse axes in addition to the vertical axis. The modified MFI operated as required and withstood the vibrational testing environment. Modifications, especially in the use of aluminachromic oxide plastic refractory in the sewage chamber, proved satisfactory. Some design changes are recommended for easier disassembly and greater structural integrity. (Author).

The incinerator is designed to fit into a compartment 12 ft x 12 ft x 8 ft. The system consists of seven modules which may be arranged to suit the compartment lay-out. The total system weight is 1400 lb. New features of the Phase II incinerator include the following: flat blade centrifugal induced draft fan in place of duct-type axial flow, heavy castable refractory throughout, larger firebox volume, heavier feeder construction, small diameter multi-tubular fly ash collector, semi-automatic feeder control, and diagnostic monitoring circuit on burner control. The MFI System was fabricated, assembled and tested. The report describes problems encountered, corrective action taken and recommendations for modifications on subsequent units. (Author).
