Book Global Infectious Disease Surveillance and Detection

Download or read book Global Infectious Disease Surveillance and Detection written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-11-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early detection is essential to the control of emerging, reemerging, and novel infectious diseases, whether naturally occurring or intentionally introduced. Containing the spread of such diseases in a profoundly interconnected world requires active vigilance for signs of an outbreak, rapid recognition of its presence, and diagnosis of its microbial cause, in addition to strategies and resources for an appropriate and efficient response. Although these actions are often viewed in terms of human public health, they also challenge the plant and animal health communities. Surveillance, defined as "the continual scrutiny of all aspects of occurrence and spread of a disease that are pertinent to effective control", involves the "systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of health data." Disease detection and diagnosis is the act of discovering a novel, emerging, or reemerging disease or disease event and identifying its cause. Diagnosis is "the cornerstone of effective disease control and prevention efforts, including surveillance." Disease surveillance and detection relies heavily on the astute individual: the clinician, veterinarian, plant pathologist, farmer, livestock manager, or agricultural extension agent who notices something unusual, atypical, or suspicious and brings this discovery in a timely way to the attention of an appropriate representative of human public health, veterinary medicine, or agriculture. Most developed countries have the ability to detect and diagnose human, animal, and plant diseases. Global Infectious Disease Surveillance and Detection: Assessing the Challenges-Finding Solutions, Workshop Summary is part of a 10 book series and summarizes the recommendations and presentations of the workshop.

Book Surgical Pathology of the Gastrointestinal System Bacterial Fungal Viral and Parasitic Infections

Download or read book Surgical Pathology of the Gastrointestinal System Bacterial Fungal Viral and Parasitic Infections written by Laura W. Lamps and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-22 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surgical Pathology of the Gastrointestinal System: Bacterial, Fungal, Viral, and Parasitic Infections provides a unique diagnostic reference text for the pathologic diagnosis of infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Written for the practicing surgical pathologist, this text combines the superior illustrations of an atlas with carefully written prose to create a useful diagnostic companion. The text is divided into four sections covering bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections of the gastrointestinal tract. The descriptive sections of each chapter are organized into short paragraphs for easy reference and include the use of tables to compare and contrast organisms and summarize differential diagnoses. Each chapter is extensively illustrated, and contains prose discussions of diagnostic features, differential diagnoses, brief clinical descriptions, and ancillary tests that help confirm the diagnosis (i.e. immunohistochemistry, special histochemical stains, and molecular diagnostic techniques). Surgical Pathology of the Gastrointestinal System: Bacterial, Fungal, Viral, and Parasitic Infections provides pertinent clinical, diagnostic, and epidemiologic information that will be valuable to the practicing surgical pathologist. This volume will also help surgical pathologists gain familiarity with other contributory laboratory tests that are available to help confirm diagnosis.

Book A Rational Approach to Clinical Infectious Diseases

Download or read book A Rational Approach to Clinical Infectious Diseases written by Zelalem Temesgen and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written specifically for non-infectious disease specialists in both inpatient and outpatient settings, A Rational Approach to Clinical Infectious Diseases provides concise, practical guidance that mimics the decision-making process and reasoning employed by an ID physician. Using clear, understandable language, Dr. Zelalem Temesgen and his esteemed colleagues at the Mayo Clinic present the art and the context of infectious diseases together with the science, helping non-specialists apply a rational approach to the diagnosis and treatment of infectious conditions. Clearly explains the rationale of opting for one particular treatment or length of course over another in order to arrange appropriate management and follow-up. Provides focused ID decision support to questions such as: What diagnostic test should I order? What is the correct antibiotic for this patient/geographical region? Are IV or oral antibiotics most appropriate? How long should the antibiotic course be and when should it be de-escalated? What special considerations should be taken in immunocompromised patients? How often should complex infections be followed up? Uses a succinct, easy-to-read writing style, following a consistent format: Important characteristics/epidemiology; Clinical related data; Rash characteristics; Ancillary diagnostic studies; Treatment; and Other. Provides visual and quick-reference support with dozens of figures and tables throughout the text. Contains invaluable guidance to help non-specialists provide the best care for patients, stem antibiotic misuse and resistance, avoid adverse drug events, and avoid unnecessary costs.
