Download or read book DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN written by Vitulia Ivone and published by CEDAM. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violence against women is one of the most widespread, pervasive and serious violations of human rights affecting every country or area of the globe. Domestic violence against women and girls – commonly known as intimate partner violence or family violence – concerns any form of physical, psychological, sexual, or economic abuse perpetrated by partners and relatives. It encompasses multiple and varied acts and behaviors – ranging from emotional and verbal abuse to femicide – aiming at affirming power and control over women and their lives. Although combating this form of violence is especially challenging in the context of private settings, domestic violence is no longer treated as a “private matter”. Decades of mobilization and sensitization of societies and institutions, strongly supported by the restless action of women’s movements, have contributed to making violence against women a priority on the national and international agendas. Indeed, the road to the adoption of international binding instruments and national legislation on domestic violence has been long and twisted. Nonetheless, today women are protected against violence by some landmark legal instruments adopted at the global, regional and national levels. This book aims to offer a systematic overview of the legal protection afforded to women and girls against domestic violence and other relevant forms of violence and discrimination, while also critically assessing the state of the law at international, regional and domestic levels. Special focus is placed on the European and Italian legal frameworkS.

Download or read book Feminist Perspectives on Teaching Masculinities written by Sveva Magaraggia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist Perspectives on Teaching Masculinities looks at teaching non-hegemonic forms of masculinities and highlights their diversity. The collection foregrounds and discusses concepts which are described and gathered as positive, caring, and inclusive masculinities, thus offering a timely and much-needed counterpoint to discussions of so-called toxic masculinity. The volume presents a wide range of theoretical reflections, case studies, and teaching resources for lecturers in higher education and practitioners in the fields of gender studies, pedagogy, and education. Its heterogeneity is based on an interdisciplinary approach, methodological variety, cross-cultural spectrum, and empirical richness, reflected in various contributions from Europe, Africa, US, and Asia. The international scope of the book and its transnational perspective is valuable in broadening perspectives on teaching masculinities. The presentation and discussion of national and local programs and campaigns promoting teaching practices on masculinities and gender provide further valuable insights into learning beyond stereotypes and realizing new concepts of masculinities. By presenting alternative performances of masculinities and fostering masculinities studies which are oriented towards gender equality and/or going beyond gender norms, Feminist Perspectives on Teaching Masculinities offers a strong response to the backlashes against feminism and gender studies from rising nationalism coupled with hegemonic masculinities.

Download or read book International Perspectives on Family Violence and Abuse written by Kathleen Malley-Morrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, in which definitions and examples of abuse from men and women from every continent and a very diverse set of backgrounds are considered. The volume provides information on the extent to which family violence is a recognized problem in each country, research findings available on different forms of family violence, and information on governmental responses to family violence. Finally, the value of an international human rights approach to abuse and violence in families is considered. The book presents an unparalleled international coverage, addressing all forms of family violence in Australia and at least two countries from every other continent. Each chapter begins by describing the cultural context in which family violence and abuse take place. These sections emphasize the role of women and children in the country. Providing a multitude of voices, each chapter includes fascinating and often dramatic definitions and examples of abuse from ordinary citizens of the country. The concluding chapter elaborates on the appropriateness of a human rights approach in addressing family violence cross-nationally and cross-culturally; and provides an excellent integration of much of the material from the previous chapters. The book is intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in psychology and sociology, as well as pre-professionals and professionals in medicine, law, and social services. It has strong relevance and value to individuals training in counseling (counselor education) and clinical psychology. Because of its readable style and extensive use of quotations from citizens of the countries studied for the book, it may also appeal to a much broader audience, including a lay audience.
