Book excerpt: La maladie d'Alzheimer (MA) est la plus fréquente des démences et se caractérise par un déclin progressif de la mémoire et des fonctions supérieures. La personne qui en est atteinte devient de moins en moins capable de s'adapter à notre monde et devient de plus en plus vulnérable. C'est donc au soignant d'adapter ses mots et sa façon d'être pour rassurer la personne et de prendre conscience qu'il n'a pas seulement un malade en face de lui mais une personne toujours digne d'intérêt. L'orthophoniste, ce thérapeute de la communication, joue un rôle primordial dans l'accompagnement d'une personne Alzheimer (PA). Dès le début de la maladie, il va stimuler les capacités résiduelles de communication de la personne. Connaissant le déclin irréversible et le caractère incurable de cette maladie, ce thérapeute peut éprouver des difficultés. Pour connaître plus précisément la nature de ces difficultés, nous avons créé un questionnaire destiné aux orthophonistes libérales. Les résultats ont montré les inquiétudes et les difficultés rencontrées par ces professionnels dans la prise en charge d'une PA. Les objectifs sont difficiles à dégager et l'intérêt d'une prise en charge n'est pas toujours clair. De plus, l'orthophoniste manque parfois d'outils et ses moyens ne sont pas toujours adéquats. L'objectif principal de cette étude est d'apporter un nouveau regard sur la prise en charge d'une PA en orthophonie. La Validation© de Naomi Feil fait partie des approches non-médicamenteuses de la MA. Peu connue en orthophonie, elle est d'un grand intérêt pour communiquer avec ces personnes. C'est à travers une relation empathique que la Validation© donne du sens au comportement et aux émotions exprimées par la PA. L'apport de cette méthode en orthophonie est double : non seulement elle permet de rassurer la PA mais elle améliore et valorise l'attitude du thérapeute.
