Book excerpt: Dans un contexte de mondialisation où les flux de biens et de capitaux sont en constante progression, la Chine semble devenir un acteur de plus en plus influant sur la scène internationale. Ainsi, depuis sa libéralisation économique, qui a débuté sous le règne de Deng Xiaoping en 1978 et s'est accentuée depuis son adhésion à l'OMC en 2001, le géant asiatique est en proie à une influence occidentale qui se manifeste particulièrement dans le régime alimentaire de sa population. Des conséquences liées à cette transition alimentaire se font ressentir sur plusieurs aspects de la vie de ses populations. Les grandes villes de la côte est étant plus exposées aux influences extérieures, il semble que les impacts de la transition alimentaire en Chine évoluent plus rapidement dans le secteur urbain qu'en région rurale. Il s'avère que cette transition alimentaire, qui s'opère depuis les années 1980 au sein de la République populaire de Chine, soit en partie à l'origine de vagues successives d'exode rural. Les statistiques dénotent que les changements dans le mode d'alimentation des populations chinoises seraient une des causes de l'augmentation des écarts de richesse entre population rurale et population urbaine. D'ailleurs, la transition alimentaire, agencée aux transitions économique et démographique qui s'observent actuellement en Chine, génèrerait vraisemblablement l'augmentation de maladies alimentaire liées à des taux d'obésité croissants. De nouvelles normes dans les industries agroalimentaires de l'État auraient aussi vue le jour en raison de l'occidentalisation du régime alimentaire chinois. Enfin, les nouveaux échanges commerciaux, qui sont nés de la hausse de la demande nationale pour divers produits alimentaires, seraient en grande partie responsables de l'expansion des infrastructures de communication du pays. Cette restructuration sociale, entre autres provoquée par le régime alimentaire de transition, oblige désormais l'État chinois à réagir afin d'assurer la stabilité politique du pays.

Less-qualified young migrants are living in subaltern conditions and young migrant graduates have strongly internalised the idea of being the "heroes" of the new Chinese society in a context of emotional capitalism. But internal and international migrations intersect and intertwine, young internal and international migrants from China produce economic cosmopolitanisms in Chinese society and through top-down, bottom-up and intermediary globalisation. The young Chinese migrant incarnates the Global Individual, what we labeled here as the Compressed Individual.

Book excerpt: This book is rooted in an epistemological approach to sociology in which the boundaries between Western and non-Western sociologies are acknowledged and built on. It argues that knowledge is organised in conceptual spaces linked to paradigms and programmes which in turn are linked to ethnocentred knowledge processes; that until recently Western approaches, including Post-Colonial, French Social Science and American approaches, have dominated non-Western theories; and that Western theories have sometimes seemed incapable of explaining phenomena produced in other societies. It goes on to argue that the blurring of boundaries between Western and non-Western sociologies is very important; and that such a Post-Western approach will mean co-production and co-construction of common knowledge, the recognition of ignored or forgotten scientific cultures and a "global change" in sociology which imposes theoretical and methodological detours, displacements, reversals and conversions. The book brings together a wide range of Western and Chinese sociologists who explore the consequences of this new approach in relation to many different issues and aspects of sociology.
