The first is to develop a general model and methodology capable of identifying and measuring the sources of productivity growth for an industry. The second purpose is to apply the methodology in order to explain why productivity growth rates differ from industry to industry within the Canadian manufacturing sector. Productivity growth is analysed over the medium term by studying trend growth rates for periods of nine or ten years' duration. The manufacturing industries are examined at the two-digit Standard Industrial Classification.
