L'étude a permis de mesurer les efficacités d'enlèvement de la DBO5, de la DCO, des acides résiniques et gras et de la toxicité pour les truites et daphnies. Les résultats montrent que la DBO5 et la teneur en MES ont été ramenées à des valeurs conformes aux nouvelles normes environnementales et que l'effluent ne présente plus de toxicité aiguë. Les données recueillies ont permis de réaliser le design et l'optimisation du système de boues activées de la nouvelle usine Désencrage C.M.D. du Cap-de-la-Madeleine.

Pour les usines de pâtes et papiers fabriquant des produits spéciaux, couvre-planchers vinyliques, par exemple, le défi à relever est important et les solutions ne sont pas évidentes. Un projet de gestion optimale des eaux de procédé a été élaboré pour une usine de ce type en examinant la possibilité de substituer les intrants toxiques utilisés lors de la fabrication des couvre-planchers et en réalisant des essais pilotes de traitement des effluents par voie biologique ou physico-chimique. Les résultats ont démontré que la technologie d'ultrafiltration asociée à la fermeture progressive des circuits d'eaux blanches permettait d'obtenir un effluent résiduel rencontrant les nouvelles normes pour ce secteur industriel.
