It examines a number of key questions relating to astronomical heritage sites and their potential recognition as World Heritage, attempting to identify what might constitute "outstanding universal value" in relation to astronomy. "Heritage Sites of Astronomy and Archaeoastronomy--Volume 2" represents the culmination of several years' work to address some of the most challenging issues raised in the first ICOMOS-IAU Thematic Study, published in 2010. These include the recognition and preservation of the value of dark skies at both cultural and natural sites and landscapes; balancing archaeoastronomical considerations in the context of broader archaeological and cultural values; the potential for serial nominations; and management issues such as preserving the integrity of astronomical sightlines through the landscape.Its case studies are developed in greater depth than those in volume 1, and generally structured as segments of draft nomination dossiers. They include seven-stone antas (prehistoric dolmens) in Portugal and Spain, the thirteen towers of Chankillo in Peru, the astronomical timing of irrigation in Oman, Pic du Midi de Bigorre Observatory in France, Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, and Aoraki-Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve in New Zealand. A case study on Stonehenge, already a World Heritage Site, focuses on preserving the integrity of the solstitial sightlines.As for the first ICOMOS-IAU Thematic Study, a international team of authors including historians, astronomers and heritage professionals is led by Professor Clive Ruggles for the IAU and Professor Michel Cotte for ICOMOS.

Book excerpt: In the late 1950s, like tens of thousands of young men of his generation, Pierre Bourdieu, having recently passed the agrégation in philosophy, found himself immersed in the Algerian war. Motivated by an impulse that, as he himself says, ‘was civic rather than political’, nothing seemed more important to him than to understand the Algerian situation and provide the elements that would enable others to come to an informed judgement about it. In extremely tough conditions and along with a small group of students, Bourdieu undertook a series of studies across an Algeria that was tightly patrolled by the army, leading him to discover the shocking reality of the resettlement camps and to analyse the mechanisms of destruction of Algerian society of which they were emblematic. To achieve the objectives he had set himself, Bourdieu had to carry out a genuine intellectual conversion, acquiring an ethnographic understanding of Algerian society, learning sociological analysis at a breakneck pace and inventing new instruments - both theoretical and empirical - that would enable him to understand the relations of domination specific to colonialism. These new tools also enabled him to analyse the nature of the crisis that the war had both produced and manifested. This unique volume brings together the first texts written by Bourdieu in the midst of the Algerian conflict, as well as later writings and interviews in which he returns to the topic of Algeria and the decisive role it played in the development of his work.

Une réflexion a été menée sur les "démarches" de responsabilité sociétale des Entreprises de Taille Intermédiaire (ETI). La responsabilité sociétale d'une entreprise peut être motivée par une éthique dite "utilitariste" d'accroître ses profits aux bénéfices des actionnaires ou par une éthique dite "moraliste" tenant compte l'ensemble des parties prenantes dans un but d'équilibre entre les domaines économiques, sociaux et environnementaux. Par ailleurs, la parution de la norme ISO 26000 a conduit la réglementation en vigueur à devenir de plus en plus exigeante vis-à-vis des externalités des entreprises et les oblige dorénavant à publier un rapport extrafinancier. Ainsi, quatre "outils" de réflexion, de mise en place, de formalisation, de valorisation de démarche de responsabilité sociétale ont été analysés et l'auteur a pu mettre en avant dans quelles mesures ils pourraient être utilisés et valorisés par les ETI. Il s'agit du Global Performance System (performance globale) du Centre des Jeunes Dirigeants, de la norme ISO 26000, du Label LUCIE et de la démarche proposée par The Natural Step. La formalisation d'une politique RSE constitue un facteur de différenciation primordial ; en parallèle une telle démarche ne peut pas faire l'économie d'un questionnement profond sur les valeurs et la mission de l'entreprise. Une stratégie d'entreprise visant à être pertinente à long terme passe aujourd'hui par le prisme de la RSE. L'auteur termine son propos en développant la notion de service à la société intimement liée à celle de développement durable.
