Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. »

Book excerpt: Sociology and Education is a sound introduction to sociology of education. The book examines the respective logics behind the contemporary sociological approaches to education, their assumptions and their limits. It clarifies the links between psychology of cognitive development, micro-sociology and macro-sociology, as well as the role ascribed to human reason in social action. Special attention is given to major scientific discussions and empirical findings regarding inequality of educational opportunity. Rooted in both American and European sociology, the book helps the reader grasp the viewpoint of the different theoretical approaches to formal education and thus to envisage new perspectives.

Book Pretend Play Among 3 year olds

Download or read book Pretend Play Among 3 year olds written by Mira Stambak and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: translated by Hermina and Morris Sinclair This book was written by a group of researchers with a common theoretical-constructivist-framework and using the same methods of naturalistic observation and data analysis. They considered that collective pretend play would provide excellent opportunities for understanding young children's thinking, especially when play arose spontaneously in a familiar environment. In such play, children often manifest types of knowledge that cannot be captured through experimental work or by observation in adult-devised situations. Spontaneous play brings out children's own preoccupations, their know-how in negotiating with one another in order to make sustained play possible, their ability to construct coherent sequences, and their often surprising insight into adult behavior. Play sequences are reported in full and sometimes dramatic detail in each of the chapters. Different activities were elicited by different situations, though all were observed in the familiar environment of day-care centers. Different situations -- play with toys such as cups, spoons and dolls, with pieces of cloth, string and cardboard, with grass, pebbles and swings in the yard, or with hand-held puppets -- allow the authors to discover often unsuspected knowledge among three-year-olds: communicative, socio-affective, societal, and psycho-social. At the same time, the authors underline the similarity of the interactive construction processes. The data and their analyses provide a solid base for two of Piaget's theoretical arguments: peer interaction leads to collaborative processes at an early age, and collaboration leads to objective knowledge via the attribution of shared meanings to jointly constructed experiences.

Book Discovering Child Art

  • Author : Jonathan David Fineberg
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2001-01-23
  • ISBN : 9780691086828
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Discovering Child Art written by Jonathan David Fineberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-23 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together thirteen distinguished critics and scholars to explore children's art and its profound but rarely documented influence on the evolution of modern art. It shows that children's art and childhood have inspired major works of art, served as central metaphors for artistic spontaneity and honesty, and provided a window into the fundamental human qualities explored by modern artists. The volume complements editor Jonathan Fineberg's groundbreaking new book, The Innocent Eye (Princeton, 1997), in which he showed how many of the greatest masters of modern art collected and were directly influenced by children's drawings. Contributors here both expand on Fineberg's themes and take the study of children's art in new directions. They examine, for example, the influence of child art on such artists as Kandinsky, Klee, Larionov, and Miró; the diverse styles of children's art; the influence of Romantic ideas on perceptions of children's art; the conception of giftedness versus education in children's drawings; and the relationship between children's art and primitivism. The book offers unique glimpses into the working processes of great modern artists, presenting, for example, Dora Vallier's personal recollections of Miró and his creative process, and new documentation about the works of the Russian avant-garde. The essays draw on art theory, psychology, and the close study of individual works of art and written texts. Discovering Child Art will appeal to a wide range of readers, including art historians, psychologists, and art educators. Contributors to the book are Troels Andersen, Rudolf Arnheim, John Carlin, Marcel Franciscono, Ernst Gombrich, Christopher Green, Josef Helfenstein, Werner Hofmann, Yuri Molok, G. G. Pospelov, Richard Shiff, Dora Vallier, and Barbara Würwag.
