Download or read book Public Policy For Women written by Marjorie Griffith Cohen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-03-21 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing essays from leading feminist academics, and social activists, Public Policy for Women addresses important public policy issues that fail to address women's needs. The volume's contributors pay particular attention to the relationship between the welfare state and vulnerable populations of women, while making substantial contributions to current public policy debates in Canada. Focusing on discussions of controversial issues such as single working mothers, prostitution, mandatory retirement, guaranteed income, and work for welfare, these essays also consider the political and economic constraints that have been brought about by neo-liberal policy changes. Full of relevant policy critiques and original recommendations for improvement, Public Policy for Women readdresses often neglected subjects and concerns and makes informative appeals for public policy to address women's needs.
Download or read book Embedding Organizations written by Marc Maurice and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "globalization" of economic activities has given rise to an interest in the relations between such tendencies, the nature of societies, and the nature of various actors within and cross-cutting societies. This book serves to systematize the approach, and react to newly arising issues. It brings together proponents, sympathizers and critics of societal analysis, and seeks to enter new fields. The message stressed and demonstrated by the editors and authors, is that the "societal space" of social, economic and political interdependencies is not being obliterated but complexified, and therefore a topical and explanatory framework.
Download or read book Working in the Service Sector written by Gerhard Bosch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise to prominence of the service sector - heralded over half a century ago as the great hope for the twenty-first century - has come to fruition. In many cases, employment in the service sector now outnumbers that in manufacturing sectors, and it is accepted that in all developed countries, the service sector is the only one in which employment will grow in future. The reasons for this is the subject of much controversy and debate, the outcomes of which are not merely of academic interest but of decisive importance for economic policy and the quality of working and living conditions in future. In order to examine these various arguments, research teams from eight European countries worked together for three years on a comparative study of the evolution of service sector employment in EU member states. They also investigated working and employment conditions in five very different service industries (banking, retailing, hospitals, IT services and care of the elderly) in a number of countries, and the results of their research are presented in this informative new collection, of interest to students academics and researchers involved in all aspects of industrial economics.

Download or read book Gender and Well Being written by Paloma de Villota and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provisioning for basic human needs is done in three main kind of institutions: the familial household; the commercial enterprise selling goods and services; the institutions of the Welfare State that provide education, medical care and other goods and personal services to all or to some specific groups of citizens in need. The purpose of this book is to study the interplay of these institutions and their impact on well-being, and to analyze key policies and measures that have been implemented in European countries. Institutions determine labour demand (men and women are hired by the institutions of the Welfare State or by market providers of care), the possibilities of consumption (wages earned can be used to buy goods and services only if such goods and services are provided by the market) and allocate people's time, in particular women's time, between paid work and unpaid domestic production and provision of care, shaping both the gender relations and time use of people of both sexes. The proper balance of these institutions is a prerequisite of well-being both of the care givers and of the care receivers, and also for satisfactory gender relations. The chapters in this book focus on the following sub-topics: gender and welfare regimes; gender, well-being and the provision of care in the family and the household; and gender and well-being in the labour market. They emphasise the interdependence of social and labour market policies in the context of fundamental changes in both working patterns (the increase in female labour-force participation rates) and social needs (including population ageing) and demonstrate that we need a more integrated approach to welfare policy which takes account not only of basic welfare entitlements, but also the need for supportive forms of service provision and employment regulation.

Book excerpt: In order to illustrate cross-country variations in mothers' work and care arrangements in Europe, this book fuses a comparative approach towards welfare systems and social policies with an analysis of mothers' social practices in several European countries. The book demonstrates that across Europe, women increasingly retain their jobs after having children but that there are, however, striking differences in labor market participation of women both between and within European countries.

Download or read book Concilier flexibilit du travail et coh sion sociale written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
