Download or read book La gloire imp riale du souverain XII e XVIIe si cle La glo ria imperiale del sovrano secoli XII XVII written by Yann Lignereux and published by Basilicata University Press - BUP. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Royal Divine Coronation Iconography in the Medieval Euro Mediterranean Area

Download or read book Royal Divine Coronation Iconography in the Medieval Euro Mediterranean Area written by Mirko Vagnoni and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, historians and art historians have created an active historiographical debate about one of the most fascinating and studied iconographic themes of the Middle Ages: the royal divine coronation. Indeed, in the specific case of some Ottonian and Salian illuminations, it has been proposed that their function was not only political or to legitimize power, as traditionally suggested (Herrscherbilder), but also liturgical and religious (Memorialbilder). This has led to a complete rethinking of the meaning of this iconographic theme: the divine coronation of the king would not symbolically allude to his earthly power but to the wholly devotional hope of receiving the crown of eternal life in the afterlife. If this academic debate has been concentrated, above all, on Ottonian and Salian royal images, this Special Issue of Arts would like to deal with this topic by stimulating the analysis of royal divine coronation and blessing scenes in religious and liturgical context (mosaics, frescos, or paintings placed in cathedrals or monastic churches and illuminations of liturgical texts) with a wider geographical and temporal setting; that is, the European and Mediterranean kingdoms in the period from the 12th to the 15th centuries.

Book Power and Ceremony in European History

Download or read book Power and Ceremony in European History written by Anna Kalinowska and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From oaths and hand-kissing to coronations and baptisms, Power and Ceremony in European History considers the governing practices, courtly rituals, and expressions of power prevalent in Europe and the Ottoman Empire from the medieval age to the modern era. Bringing together political and art historical approaches to the study of power, this book reveals how ceremonies and rituals - far from simply being ostentatious displays of wealth - served as a primary means of communication between different participants in political and courtly life. It explores how ceremonial culture changed over time and in different regions to provide readers with a nuanced comparative understanding of rituals and ceremonies since the middle ages, showing how such performances were integral to the evolution of the state in Europe. This collection of essays is of immense value to both historians and art historians interested in representations of power and the political culture of Europe from 1450 onwards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval accounts of how Norway was unified by its first king provide a lively, revealing, and wonderfully entertaining example of this process. Taking the story of how Harald Fairhair unified Norway in the ninth century as its central example, Bruce Lincoln illuminates the way a state's foundation story blurs the distinction between history and myth and how variant tellings of origin stories provide opportunities for dissidence and subversion as subtle - or not so subtle - modifications are introduced through details of character, incident, and plot structure.

Book The Son of Man in Myth and History

Download or read book The Son of Man in Myth and History written by Frederick Houk Borsch and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-03-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Borsch has not answered all the questions, of course. Who can? But his view of the Man tradition makes more sense to me than, for example, Perrin's rather cavalier dismissal of the evidence, and it not only enlightens but also enlivens the discussion. As against the extreme skeptics, Borsch is also convincing to me in arguing the case for a large measure of authenticity in the Son of man tradition in the Gospels. If the proof of the pudding is in the eating, the book constantly calls me back to its pages for insight regarding the problem, both in its historical dimension and in its bearing upon the meaning of Jesus of Nazareth for faith today. --'Theology' "The author is well aware of the difficulties involved in entering a field wherein so much investigation has been done. And of this, with the positive and negative conclusions, he gives an excellent survey, crisp and critical . . . . The lines opened up will engage the attention of a new and more positive chapter in the form-critical argument. --'London Quarterly and Holborn Review'

Book More than Mythology

  • Author : Catharina Raudvere
  • Publisher : Nordic Academic Press

Download or read book More than Mythology written by Catharina Raudvere and published by Nordic Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-01-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by distinguished scholars from multiple perspectives, this account widens the interpretative scope on religious life among the pre-Christian Scandinavian people. The religion of the Viking Age is conventionally identified through its mythology: the ambiguous character Odin, the forceful Thor, and the end of the world approaching in Ragnarök. However, pre-Christian religion consisted of so much more than mythic imagery and legends and has long lingered in folk tradition. Exploring the religion of the North through an interdisciplinary approach, the book sheds new light on a number of topics, including rituals, gender relations, social hierarchies, and interregional contacts between the Nordic tradition and the Sami and Finnish regions.
