Book The Land of France 1815 1914

Download or read book The Land of France 1815 1914 written by Hugh D. Clout and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1983, attempts to examine the rural change in France between 1815 and 1914 with a sustained and explicit spatial approach. This volume represents a position in which space and time are meshed in an analysis of the forces underlying land-use and other changes that have contributed much to the making of the French landscape. In this book the shift from the rural economy towards the urban markets in this period is examined thoroughly, using the vast statistical record of cadastral surveys and agricultural enquiries as well as contemporary reports and agricultural journals. The detailed mapping of historical data is a major feature of the treatment. As a scholarly account of a major topic in historical geography, The Land of France 1815-1914 should appear to all students and researchers with interests in historical and rural geography and economic history and especially those specialising in European studies.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Ancien R gime

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Ancien R gime written by William Doyle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Oxford Handbook of the Ancien Régime, an international team of thirty contributors survey and present current thinking about the world of pre-revolutionary France and Europe. The idea of the Ancien Régime was invented by the French revolutionaries to define what they hoped to destroy and replace. But it was not a precise definition, and although historians have found it conceptually useful, there is wide disagreement about what the Ancien Régime's main features were, how they worked, how old they were, how far they stretched, how dynamic or inert they were, and how far the revolutionaries succeeded in their ambitions to eradicate them. In this wide-ranging and authoritative collection, old and newer areas of research into the Ancien Régime are presented and assessed, and there has been no attempt to impose any sort of consensus. The result shows what a lively field of historical enquiry the Ancien Régime remains, and points the way towards a range of promising new directions for thinking and writing about the intriguing complex of historical problems which it continues to pose.

Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century France was a society of apparent paradoxes. It is famous for periodic and bloody revolutionary upheavals, for class conflict and for religious disputes, yet it was marked by relative demographic stability, gradual urbanisation and modest economic change, class conflict and ongoing religious and cultural tensions. Incorporating much recent research, Roger Magraw draws both upon still-valuable insights derived from the 'new social history' of the 1960s and upon more recent approaches suggested by gender history , cultural anthropology and the 'linguistic turn'.

Book The French Revolution and Historical Materialism

Download or read book The French Revolution and Historical Materialism written by Henry Heller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text reasserts the Marxist view of the French Revolution as a bourgeois and capitalist revolution. Based mainly on articles published in the journal Historical Materialism it challenges the still dominant revisionist view of the French Revolution. It serves to restore the close tie between the history of the Old Regime and the Revolution. It demonstrates that the rise of a bourgeois capitalist class has a long history dating back to the sixteenth century. Moreover, it shows that the Revolution itself played a large role in strengthening the bourgeoisie politically and economically while bringing about the unification of financial and productive capital. Indeed, it shows that the rising of the masses during the Revolution, viewed by revisionism as economically regressive, in fact helped to bring about the consolidation of capitalism.

Book Case Studies in the Origins of Capitalism

Download or read book Case Studies in the Origins of Capitalism written by Xavier Lafrance and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume builds and expands on the groundbreaking work of Robert Brenner and Ellen Meiksins Wood on the origins of capitalism. Whereas Brenner and Wood focused mostly on the emergence of capitalism in the English countryside (agrarian capitalism), this book utilizes their approach to offer original, theoretically sophisticated, and empirically informed accounts of transitions to capitalism – both agrarian and industrial – in a wide range of countries in order to provide within a single volume a diverse collection of relatively brief yet detailed case studies of the historical transition to capitalism distributed across three continents. Offering a new and highly original analysis of the global spread of capitalism, this book will be a unique contribution to the longstanding debate on the transition to capitalism.

Book Mixed Communities

Download or read book Mixed Communities written by Gary Bridge and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encouraging neighbourhood social mix has been a major goal of urban policy and planning in a number of different countries. This book draws together a range of case studies by international experts to assess the impacts of social mix policies and the degree to which they might represent gentrification by stealth. The contributions consider the range of social mix initiatives in different countries across the globe and their relationship to wider social, economic and urban change. The book combines understandings of social mix from the perspectives of researchers, policy makers and planners and the residents of the communities themselves. Mixed Communities also draws out more general lessons from these international comparisons - theoretically, empirically and for urban policy. It will be highly relevant for urban researchers and students, policy makers and practitioners alike.
