Download or read book La r ception de l architecture du mouvement moderne written by Jean-Yves Andrieux and published by Université de Saint-Etienne. This book was released on 2005 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Cahiers th matiques n 2

Download or read book Cahiers th matiques n 2 written by Richard Klein and published by . This book was released on 2002-08-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Arieh Sharon and Modern Architecture in Israel

Download or read book Arieh Sharon and Modern Architecture in Israel written by Eran Neuman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arieh Sharon and Modern Architecture in Israel: Building Social Pragmatism offers the first comprehensive survey of the work of Arieh Sharon and analyzes and discusses his designs and plans in relation to the emergence of the State of Israel. A graduate of the Bauhaus, Sharon worked for a few years at the office of Hannes Mayer before returning to Mandatory Palestine. There, he established his office which was occupied in its first years in planning kibbutzim and residential buildings in Tel Aviv. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Arieh Sharon became the director and chief architect of the National Planning Department, where he was asked to devise the young country’s first national masterplan. Known as the Sharon Plan, it was instrumental in shaping the development of the new nation. During the 1950s and 1960s, Sharon designed many of Israel’s institutions, including hospitals and buildings on university campuses. This book presents Sharon’s exceptionally wide range of work and examines his perception of architecture in both socialist and pragmatist terms. It also explores Sharon’s modernist approach to architecture and his subsequent shift to Brutalist architecture, when he partnered with Benjamin Idelson in the 1950s and when his son, Eldar Sharon, joined the office in 1964. Thus, the book contributes a missing chapter in the historiography of Israeli architecture in particular and of modern architecture overall. This book will be of interest to researchers in architecture, modern architecture, Israel studies, Middle Eastern studies and migration of knowledge.

Book The Challenge of Change Dealing with the Legacy of the Modern Movement

Download or read book The Challenge of Change Dealing with the Legacy of the Modern Movement written by D. van den Heuvel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation of architecture - and the conversation of Modern architecture in particular – has assumed new challenges. Rather than attempting to return a Modern building to its resumed original state, the challenge of these proceedings is to revalue the essence of the manifold manifestations of Modern architecture and redefine its meanings in a rapidly changing world of digital revolution, worldwide mobility and environmental awareness. This volume aims to provide a variety of platforms for the exchange of ideas and experience. A large, international group of architects, historians, scholars, preservationists and other parties involved in the processes of preserving, renovating and transforming Modern buildings has been invited to investigate the paradox of the Modern monument, and to reflect on the manifold dilemmas of change and continuity. The general theme is elaborated through five sub-themes. The sub-theme ‘Change and Continuity’ addresses the tensions between change and continuity from a historical-theoretical perspective. ‘Restructuring Cities and Landscapes’ focuses on the larger scale of city and landscape, while ‘Shifts in Programme and Flexibility’ draws attention to the scale of the building or building complex, and questions limits of re-use and flexibility. The fourth sub-theme deals with education and the fifth sub-theme ‘Progress, Technology and Sustainability’ considers specific issues of techniques and materials.

Book The Challenge of Change

Download or read book The Challenge of Change written by Dirk van den Heuvel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The legacy of the Modern Movement has gained legendary status, largely as a result of the appreciation of the masterworks and the visionary architectural concepts. In the reality of everyday life, however, it has been difficult to maintain the architectural creations of the Modern Movement in such a way that they still reflect the original intentions of their designers. Many buildings and ensembles of the Modern Movement have already been saved; the icons amongst these have even become so precious that they are treated like pieces of art rather than as buildings in everyday use. But despite the successes that have been achieved, many buildings and ensembles are still at risk of demolition or maltreatment. The bi-annul international conference is one means by which it is possible to continue furthering the aims of Docomomo. Knowing that many modern architects aimed at functionality and changeability, the challenge for today is how to deal with the modern heritage in relation to its continuously changing context, including physical, economic and functional changes, as well as socio-cultural, political and scientific ones. It is with this in mind that conservation in general, and the conservation of modern architecture in particular, has become a new challenge. Rather than attempting to return a modern building to its presumed original state, our challenge is to revalue the essence of the manifold manifestations of modern architecture and redefine its meanings in our changing world of digital revolution, worldwide mobility and environmental awareness."--Jacket.

Book Sport and Violence Rethinking Elias

Download or read book Sport and Violence Rethinking Elias written by Dominique Bodin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book, in discussing Elias’s theory, is not to refute it. Tendentiously, the theory works with its weaknesses and strong points and it has been enriched by a number of authors over time. The objective of this volume is to discuss the blind spots and, more simply, what is too often taken for granted: namely the obvious pacifying effect of sports and/or produced by sports. This analysis has been guided by two perspectives: the sociological one which questions the "naturalization" of sport which is also the naturalization of the "wildlings" which have to be civilized, and the other which comes from philosophical anthropology and attempts to comprehend the long term characteristics of this union – or disunion – of sport and violence.

Book Photography Reconstruction and the Cultural History of the Postwar European City

Download or read book Photography Reconstruction and the Cultural History of the Postwar European City written by Tom Allbeson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining imagery of urban space in Britain, France and West Germany up to the early 1960s, this book reveals how photography shaped individual architectural projects and national rebuilding efforts alike. Exploring the impact of urban photography at a pivotal moment in contemporary European architecture and culture, this book addresses case studies spanning the destruction of the war to the modernizing reconfiguration of city spaces, including ruin photobooks about bombed cities, architectural photography of housing projects and imagery of urban life from popular photomagazines, as well as internationally renowned projects like UNESCO’s Paris Headquarters, Coventry Cathedral and Berlin’s Gedächtniskirche. This book reveals that the ways of seeing shaped in the postwar years by urban photography were a vital aspect of not only discourses on the postwar city but also debates central to popular culture, from commemoration and modernization to democratization and Europeanization. This book will be a fascinating read for researchers in the fields of photography and visual studies, architectural and urban history, and cultural memory and contemporary European history.

Book Quand l architecture internationale s exposait 1922 1932

Download or read book Quand l architecture internationale s exposait 1922 1932 written by Danièle Pauly and published by Fage Editions. This book was released on 2010 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book LE CORBUSIER ET LE PROJET DE LA MODERNIT

Download or read book LE CORBUSIER ET LE PROJET DE LA MODERNIT written by Uwe Bernhardt and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
