Download or read book Lost to Desire written by Wolfgang Lassmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the work of psychoanalysts in post WWII France with patients beset by somatic problems with little manifest fantasy life, and how their concept of opératoire continues to inform the theory and practice of working with patients in crisis. The author explores what the new concept has elicited in a community of practitioners – close to the École Psychosomatique de Paris – over a period of some sixty years. As a 'skin for thought' it facilitated change while preserving coherence, gradually beginning to attract further considerations. Important themes have included: the early groundwork necessary for the configuration of fantasy, the importance of a shared imaginary, the role of denial and obliterated memories as a bond between people, emergency measures of a Me cut off from revitalisation, the effects of the rhythms and atmosphere at the workplace on family life, and the consequences of a crisis suppressed for lack of a holding frame. As psychoanalytic discourse adapted to the challenges, the original perspective changed aspect, moving from a systematic evaluation of what the patients did not produce to what the analyst had to fill in to make sense of the situation. Clashing with the terrain, French psychoanalysts raised important problems about psychic anaemia that are stimulating and deserve cross-cultural discussion. This book will appeal to psychoanalysts in practice and training who wish to learn more about this ground-breaking work on memory and trauma, and how to apply it to their own practice.

Book A New Body Mind Approach

Download or read book A New Body Mind Approach written by Jean Benjamin Stora and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrative psychosomatics is a new approach to explaining illnesses and how patients relate to their problems. This new discipline draws on psychoanalysis, medicine and the neurosciences, rather than solely on psychoanalysis, which has inspired all the psychosomatic approaches until now. Amongst the fascinating and compelling questions that this book raises are: how can we understand an illness if we only analyse the psyche? How can we understand patients if we only take account of their biological data? Are hypochondriac problems generated by the mind, as some doctors believe, or are the problems in fact more complex? The author also considers whether traditional psychoanalysis and medicine might actually distance practitioners from an understanding of patients and illnesses. For integrative psychosomatics, the psyche or the mind can play either a greater or lesser role in illness: advances in research in the neurosciences and biology over the last twenty years have uncovered many biological and genetic processes involved in the relations between the central nervous system and the other systems that constitute the human psychosomatic entity.

Book When the Body Displaces the Mind

Download or read book When the Body Displaces the Mind written by Jean Benjamin Stora and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the mind really generate a physical disease? Conversely, can the body cause mental illness? What do we know today about their interaction? The relations between body and mind are the source of many problems that are currently treated separately by psychoanalysts and doctors because of the compartmentalisation between their disciplines. Despite differences in clinical practice, we all stand to benefit from a common understanding of the reciprocal influences of the mind and the body and the ways in which these are interrelated. It is time to stop treating the body in isolation from treatment of the mind and to understand that where the psychic apparatus fails in its key task of managing the excitations generated by the tensions and frustrations of everyday life, it is the body that takes over. With a wealth of clinical examples, the author proposes an innovative theoretical and clinical approach that seeks to break down the barriers between biology and psychoanalysis; he also demonstrates its benefits for the health and recovery of patients and its implications for disease prevention.

Book The Philosophy of Julia Kristeva

Download or read book The Philosophy of Julia Kristeva written by Sara G. Beardsworth and published by Open Court Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 1028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philosophy of Julia Kristeva is the latest addition to the highly acclaimed series, The Library of Living Philosophers. The book epitomizes the objectives of this acclaimed series; it contains critical interpretation of one of the greatest philosophers of our time, and pursues more creative regional and world dialogue on philosophical questions. The format provides a detailed interaction between those who interpret and critique Kristeva’s work and the seminal thinker herself, giving broad coverage, from diverse viewpoints, of all the major topics establishing her reputation. With questions directed to the philosopher while they are alive, the volumes in The Library of Living Philosophers have come to occupy a uniquely significant place in the realm of philosophy. The inclusion of Julia Kristeva constitutes a vital addition to an already robust list of thinkers. The Philosophy of Julia Kristeva exemplifies world-class intellectual work closely connected to the public sphere. Kristeva has been said to have “inherited the intellectual throne left vacant by Simone de Beauvoir,” and has won many awards, including the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought. Julia Kristeva’s autobiography provides an excellent introduction to her work, situating it in relation to major political, intellectual, and cultural movements of the time. Her upbringing in Soviet-dominated Bulgaria, her move to the French intellectual landscape of the 1960s, her visit to Mao’s China, her response to the fall of the Berlin Wall, her participation in a papal summit on humanism, her appointment by President Chirac as President of the National Council on Disability, and her setting up of the Simone de Beauvoir prize, honoring women in active and creative fields, are all major moments of this fascinating life. The major part of the book is comprised of thirty-six essays by Kristeva’s foremost interpreters and critics, together with her replies to the essays. These encounters cover an exceptionally wide range of theoretical and literary writing. The strong international and multidisciplinary focus includes authors from over ten countries, and spans the fields of philosophy, semiotics, literature, psychoanalysis, feminist thought, political theory, art, and religion. The comprehensive bibliography provides further access to Kristeva’s writings and thought. The preparation of this volume, the thirty-sixth in the series, was supported by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Book Psychosomatics Today

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marilia Aisenstein
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-03-29
  • ISBN : 0429918224
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book Psychosomatics Today written by Marilia Aisenstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychosomatics have classically been of peripheral importance within our wellknown theoretical models, despite the fact that they do have a history in the field of psychoanalysis. This might be owing to the fact that Freud did not explicitly approach psychosomatics and, in consequence, did not put forward any hypotheses within his theoretical body. However, the Freudian concepts of actual neuroses and mixed neuroses are a basis in order to understand psychosomatic phenomena. The same could be said about the connections established with subsequent Freudian theoretical models, such as: the introduction of narcissism, unresolved mourning processes, early trauma and the action of Thanatos.

Book Mentalization

  • Author : Fredric N. Busch
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2011-02-25
  • ISBN : 113546894X
  • Pages : 294 pages

Download or read book Mentalization written by Fredric N. Busch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentalization is the capacity to perceive and interpret behavior in terms of intentional mental states, to imagine what others are thinking and feeling, and is a concept that has taken the psychological and psychoanalytic worlds by storm. This collection of papers, carefully edited by Fredric Busch, clarifies its import as an essential perspective for understanding the human psyche and interpersonal relationships. The book is divided into theoretical, research and clinical papers, reflecting how the investigators thoughtfully and purposefully pursued each of these goals. Those involved in identifying mentalization have also made consistent efforts to measure and research the concept. Thus, in addition to expanding the theoretical bases and implications of mentalization and identifying clinically useful applications, the authors describe research that scientifically grounds the concept. Mentalization addresses and expands upon a number of implications of mentalization. These include: What are the broader implications for mentalization with regard to social and evolutionary development? How does mentalization interdigitate with other psychoanalytic models? How is mentalization systematically assessed? What clinical correlates have been found? How do we understand variations in the capacity for mentalization, even within a given individual? What are the applications of mentalization in the clinical arena, including specific disorders? Readers of this volume will find their clinical work to be more productive and their view of the human psyche broadened.

Book Reading French Psychoanalysis

Download or read book Reading French Psychoanalysis written by Dana Birksted-Breen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has psychoanalysis developed in France in the years since Lacan so dramatically polarized the field? In this book, Dana Birksted-Breen and Sara Flanders of the British Psychoanalytical Society, and Alain Gibeault of the Paris Psychoanalytical Society provide an overview of how French psychoanalysis has developed since Lacan. Focusing primarily on the work of psychoanalysts from the French Psychoanalytical Association and from the Paris Psychoanalytical Society, the two British psychoanalysts view the evolution of theory as it appears to them from the outside, while the French psychoanalyst explains and elaborates from inside the French psychoanalytic discourse. Seminal and representative papers have been chosen to illuminate what is special about French thinking. A substantial general introduction argues in favour of the specificity of 'French psychoanalysis', tracing its early influences and highlighting specific contemporary developments. Sections are made up of introductory material by Alain Gibeault, followed by illustrative papers in the following categories: the history of psychoanalysis in France the pioneers and their legacy the setting and the process of psychoanalysis phantasy and representation the body and the drives masculine and feminine sexuality psychosis. An excellent introduction to French psychoanalytical debate, Reading French Psychoanalysis sheds a complementary light on thinking that has evolved differently in England and North America. It will be ideal reading for beginners and advanced students of clinical theory as well as experienced psychoanalysts wanting to know more about French Psychoanalytic theory, and how it has developed.

Book Body Psychotherapy in Progressive and Chronic Disorders

Download or read book Body Psychotherapy in Progressive and Chronic Disorders written by Christa D. Ventling and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body-oriented psychotherapy recognises the continuity and deep connections between mind and body, psyche and soma. This concept is of key significance in the treatment of patients suffering from irreversible disorders like diabetes or infertility or from a progressive disease like multiple sclerosis, aids or cancer. Such a diagnosis is hard to accept. Body psychotherapists using special techniques can often achieve a deepened body consciousness in the patient leading to new insights and hence an altered state of mind. The papers presented here testify to the beneficial effects of the therapies and the improvement of the quality of life in spite of the irreversible somatic condition or the time left to live. Furthermore, the on-going process in the treating therapist is highlighted. Readers will appreciate the candid accounts of the therapists concerns for their patients, their reflections on health, on the impending threat of death as well as on the spiritual aspects of dying. Psychotherapists of all disciplines, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, oncologists, neurologists, general practitioners as well as medical students will find this publication different, educational and inspiring.

Book Le processus psychosomatique

Download or read book Le processus psychosomatique written by Pascal BECU and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
