Download or read book Law and the Arms Trade written by Laurence Lustgarten and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book offers an extensive legal analysis-grounded in public, EU, and international law-of arms trade regulation, integrated with insights drawn from international relations. The sale of weapons and related technologies is, globally, one of the most politically controversial and ethically contentious forms of commerce. Intimately connected with sustaining repressive governments and violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, arms exports are also a central element in the economic and strategic policies of the governments of all large industrial states. They have also been the source of abundant corruption, and of serious challenges to the norms and effectiveness of constitutional accountability in democratic states. On paper, the arms trade is heavily regulated: national legislation and international treaties are in place which purport to prohibit certain transactions and limit others. Yet despite its importance, legal and international relations scholarship on the subject has been surprisingly limited. This book fills this gap in the literature by examining and comparing the export control regimes of eight leading nations - USA, Russia, the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, China, and India - with chapters contributed by leading experts in the field of law and international relations.

Book Distant Neighbours

Download or read book Distant Neighbours written by Nazih N. M. Ayubi and published by Garnet & Ithaca Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although geographically contiguous, culturally and 'developmentally' Europe and the Middle East are still 'distant neighbours'. The record of relations between the two regions, especially in trade, finance and investment reveals that while Europe is concerned about oil, immigration and Islamic radicalism, countries of the Middle East and North Africa are worried about their developmental prospects and possible marginalisation by an enlarging Europe. The distinguished contributors to this book, writing in either English or French, examine the potential and the prospects for establishing a new 'development zone' that will promote fuller co-operation between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

Book The Epoch of Universalism 1769 1989 L poque de l universalisme 1769 1989

Download or read book The Epoch of Universalism 1769 1989 L poque de l universalisme 1769 1989 written by Franck Hofmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 witnessed the 30th anniversary of the German reunification. But the remembrance of the fall of the Berlin Wall coincided with another event of global importance that caught much less attention: the 250th anniversary of Napoleon Bonaparte’s birth. There is an undeniable historical and philosophical dimension to this coincidence. Napoleon’s appearance on the scene of world history seems to embody European universalism (soon thereafter in the form of a ‘modern’ imperial project); whilst scholars such as Francis Fukuyama saw in the events of 1989 its historical fulfilment. Today, we see more clearly that the fall of the Berlin Wall stands for an epistemic earthquake, which generated a world that can no longer be grasped through universal concepts. Here, we deal with the idea of Europe and of its relation to the world itself. Picking up on this contingency of world history with an ironic wink, the volume analyses in retrospect the epoch of European universalism. It focusses on its dialectics, polemically addressing and remembering both 1769 and 1989.
