Book excerpt: Ce travail porte sur l'activité de planification de séance et de cycle chez des enseignants d'EPS. Deux conceptions sont présentées dans le premier chapitre. Une conception normative, dominante dans la formation des enseignants, qui prône des préparations explicites, exhaustives, déductives et écrites. La seconde, issue de l'approche descriptive de la "pensée des enseignants" décrit l'activité réelle de planification comme étant souple, adaptable à l'interaction, en partie implicite et faisant un usage limité de l'écriture. Dans la lignée de ces travaux majoritairement nord-américains, trois études ont été menées auprès d'enseignants d'EPS français utilisant différentes méthodes. La première compare des enseignants débutants et expérimentés dans une situation de simulation de planification de séance. Les résultats montrent que les expérimentés sont plus rapides, qu'ils ont des processus de résolution qualitativement différents et qu'ils font un usage moindre de l'écriture. La seconde étude s'intéresse à la planification d'un enseignant débutant pendant un cycle de volley-ball. On observe un recours systématique à l'écriture, des planifications très précises, analytiques et d'importantes difficultés à planifier. La troisième étude porte sur les représentaions d'enseignants experts sur leur planification. Elle met en évidence la nature fondamentalement différente des planifications de cycle, essentiellement pré-actives et des planifications de séance, post-actives et centrées sur des aspects atypiques des séances. Le troisième chapitre tente d'intégrer l'approche pragmatique de la planification dans une analyse ergonomique en identifiant un ensemble de contraintes qui s'exercent sur l'enseignant. Cette analyse souligne la complexité de l'enseignement conçu comme une activité de conception et d'exécution soumises à de fortes contraintes de fonctionnement mais laissant une grande part de liberté sur un plan pédagogique. L'adaptation de l'enseignant à sa tâche repose sur la mise en oeuvre de stratégies qui visent à rendre l'enseignement possible, économique tout en maintenant une certaine efficacité. L'approche ergonomique conduit à considérer la planification comme une stratégie centrale dans cette adaptation et fournit une autre interprétation des résultats de la recherche. La discussion est consacrée à une synthèse des résultats, à une discussion sur le rôle central de la mémoire dans l'activité des enseignants et aux répercussions de ce travail au plan des conceptions de la compétence enseignante.
