Son père tient là une modeste épicerie. Agrégé de philosophie, il enseigne à Pau et à Limoges. En 1851 il est expulsé de France par Napoléon III pour ses idées républicaines. Il rentre en 1859 et devient journaliste. En 1871 il est nommé préfet du Rhône. Elu député, il devient l'ami de Gambetta. Sa carrière politique le conduit à être successivement ambassadeur à Londres, ministre des Affaires Etrangères du gouvernement Jules Ferry, puis président du Sénat. C'est un excellent orateur. Il est élu à l'Académie Française (au fauteuil d'Ernest Renan) et traduit des œuvres allemandes (en particulier des opéras de Richard Wagner). Il meurt à Paris le 25 octobre 1896. Admirateur de Guillaume de Humbolt (La Philosophie individualiste lui est consacrée), il est le seul Français à aller à Francfort rendre visite à Arthur Schopenhauer. Il en ramène un document exceptionnel : le compte-rendu de son entrevue avec le vieux philosophe, sous le titre Un bouddhiste contemporain en Allemagne, Arthur Schopenhauer. Ce volume regroupe les œuvres de Challemel-Lacour, pessimiste républicain (espèce rare), souvent sarcastique, pénétrant, au style limpide et acéré, ainsi que ses deux discours les plus brillants, extraits de ses Œuvres oratoires. Sa vision de la République, de la laïcité et de la liberté d'opinion, du droit à la critique mais aussi du devoir citoyen, peut aujourd'hui être admise comme incarnant l'un des modèles possibles de la pensée politique contemporaine.

Son œuvre ne trouve guère place que dans les histoires de la linguistique, comme une étape dans la série des réflexions métaphysiques sur le langage ou un moment de la préhistoire d’une science, la linguistique. En vérité, sa théorie du langage ne peut se comprendre, en sa signification profonde et en sa visée essentielle, à partir des seuls écrits strictement linguistiques plus tardifs (après 1820), mais requiert la mise à jour, objet de la présente étude, de la fondation philosophique sur laquelle elle repose tout entière. Celle-ci a été construite dans la décennie 1790-1800 sur fond d’une méditation approfondie et renouvelée du kantisme puis, sur cette base théorique, à travers l’exploration méthodique, constamment appuyée sur un savoir positif considérable, de divers domaines de la connaissance et de l’activité humaines. Compris comme autant d’essais pour élucider, grâce à la coopération de la spéculation et de l’empirie, la question : Qu’est-ce que l’homme ? reconnue comme la question fondamentale de la philosophie, les écrits apparemment hétérogènes de cette période décisive révèlent alors une réelle unité. Cette pensée, ainsi dévoilée, se montre comme une tentative très originale, sans doute en son temps inactuelle, pour frayer, à partir du criticisme décelé comme le début de la modernité, une voie tout à fait autre que celle qui, de Fichte à Hegel, s’est imposée à la postérité, celle d’une anthropologie philosophique, qui effectue la transformation de la philosophie transcendantale en une philosophie de l’homme. Celle-ci, élaborée très tôt, au tournant de deux siècles, contient la clé de l’intelligibilité de ce qu’on appelle la « philosophie du langage » de Humboldt, laquelle n’est, de fait, que l’ultime figure, celle qui achève cette transformation en découvrant le langage comme la médiation dernière entre l’homme et le monde. Dans cette optique, cette pensée authentiquement philosophique peut être appréciée comme l’origine d’une interprétation de l’univers humain qui ne trouvera sa reprise qu’en notre siècle.

Volume 1 deals with the basic conceptions necessary for a critical analysis of prevailing theories of justice and of the conditions which a constitution securing personal liberty would have to satisfy. In volume 2, the author examines the theories of utilitariansim and legal positivism and considers the concept of 'social justice.' He shows this ideal to be devoid of meaning and therefore a most harmful and dangerous cause of the mis-direction of well-meant efforts: he demonstrates that it is a remnant of the tribal ethics of a closed society and whooly incompatible with the individual freedom whih the Open Society promises. In the final volume, Hayek analyses and discards modern sociobiological theories of morality and social conduct, demonstrating that man's behaviour pattern has been determined more by custom than by the exercise of reason, and that mind and culture therefore developed concurrently and not successively. He shows how the democratic ideal is in danger of miscarrying due to the erroneous assumptions that there can be moral standards without moral discipline, that the element of tradition can be ignored in proposals for restructuring society, and the way in which the disctinct ideals of egalitarianism and democracy are increasingly confused.

Book excerpt: not lie in the conceptual distinctions but in the perceived functions of metaphors and whether in the concrete case they are judged positive or negative. The ongoing debates reflect these concerns quite clearly~ namely that metaphors are judged on the basis of supposed dangers they pose and opportunities they offer. These are the criteria of evaluation that are obviously dependent on the context in which the transfer of meaning occurs. Our fundamental concern is indeed the transfer itself~ its prospects and its limits. Looking at possible functions of metaphors is one approach to under standing and elucidating sentiments about them. The papers in this volume illustrate, by quite different examples, three basic functions of metaphors: illustrative, heuristic~ and constitutive. These functions rep resent different degrees of transfer of meaning. Metaphors are illustrative when they are used primarily as a literary device, to increase the power of conviction of an argument, for example. Although the difference between the illustrative and the heuristic function of metaphors is not great, it does exist: metaphors are used for heuristic purposes whenever "differences" of meaning are employed to open new perspectives and to gain new insights. In the case of "constitutive" metaphors they function to actually replace previous meanings by new ones. Sabine Maasen in her paper introduces the distinction between transfer and transforma tion.

Reviel Netz exploits the mathematicians' practices in the construction and lettering of their diagrams, and the continuing interaction between text and diagram in their proofs, to illuminate the underlying cognitive processes. A close examination of the mathematical use of language follows, especially mathematicians' use of repeated formulae. Two crucial chapters set out to show how mathematical proofs are structured and explain why Greek mathematical practice manages to be so satisfactory. A final chapter looks into the broader historical setting of Greek mathematical practice.
