As a consequence he is able to offer a much fuller and more accurate portrait of the saints life and thought than his predecessors. He explores the dynamics of her family life and the early development of her spirituality. He draws extensively on the correspondence of her mother and documents her influence on Thereses autobiography and spirituality. He charts the development of Therese's career as a writer. He gives close attention to her poetry and plays usually dismissed as undistinguished and argues that they have great value as texts by which she addressed and informed her Carmelite community. He delves into the French medical literature of the time, in an effort to understand how the tuberculosis of which she died at the age of 24 was treated and lamentably mistreated. Finally, he offers a new understanding of Therese as a theologian for whom love, rather than doctrines and creeds, was the paramount value. Adding substantially to our knowledge and appreciation of this immensely popular and attractive figure, this book should appeal to many general readers as well as to scholars and students of modern Catholic history.

While addressing issues of influence and intentionality, Dalle Vacche concludes that intertextuality is central to an appreciation of the dialogical nature of the filmic medium, which, in appropriating or rejecting art history, defines itself in relation to national traditions and broadly shared visual cultures.

Until the 1960s religious institutes played an important role both in society at large as well as within the church (for example, at the level of the missions, liturgy and art). A partir de l'analyse de paroles de femmes dans la première guerre mondiale, à travers journaux intimes ou témoignages oraux, les chercheurs montrent qu'elles commencent à percevoir leur identité de manière collective, en développant une certaine conscience féminine, voire féministe. Cette période n'était qu'une parenthèse durant laquelle les femmes ont-été sollicitées en tant que citoyennes, sans que leur citoyenneté ne soit clairement acquise ou que l'égalité entre les sexes ne soit discutée par ailleurs, une fois les fronts terminés. Malgré tout, les femmes parlent de ce moment-clef, de leur engagement pour la cause nationale, de l'enthousiasme de ce collectif de femmes, comme d'un changement radical dans leur manière de concevoir leur identité et leurs valeurs intrinsèques. A travers les articles présentés dans cet ouvrage, qui analysent la position des femmes, vues par elles-mêmes, dans les pays d'Europe, il se dégage une forme de conscience féminine collective au sortir de la guerre qui permettra aux femmes de se former en groupes de citoyennes dans les décennies suivantes, pour obtenir la reconnaissance de leurs droits civiques.
