Book The bad German and the good Italian

Download or read book The bad German and the good Italian written by Filippo Focardi and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Axis War on the side of Germany, Mussolini's Italy was responsible for serious war crimes, especially in Yugoslavia and Greece. This 'dark side' of the fascist war, however, is not present in the national memory built after 1945. To distinguish Italy from the former German ally and avoid a punitive peace, the monarchist and anti-fascist ruling classes elaborated a master narrative that highlighted the opposition of the Italian people to Mussolini's war and the humanitarian behavior of Italian soldiers, depicted as saviors of Jews. All responsibility for the crimes committed in the Axis war was placed on the shoulders of the Germans, who thus became a convenient alibi for the national conscience.

Book Languages of Discrimination and Racism in Twentieth Century Italy

Download or read book Languages of Discrimination and Racism in Twentieth Century Italy written by Marcella Simoni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents one of the first extensive studies that investigates the persistence of questions of race and racism in Italy from the liberal age to the present, through colonialism, Fascism and post-war Italy. It adopts an interdisciplinary perspective to investigate the intertwining of the cultural, social, legislative and political dynamics of discrimination in Italy’s past and present. Drawing upon the expertise of historians, political scientists, sociologists, scholars of literature and experts in cultural studies, the original essays collected in this volume show a remarkable continuity and the persistence of racism in the Italian cultural and political discourse, in society and in the representation of Others. They also speak of the shifting of practices of Othering from one group to another in different historical contexts.

Download or read book Home After Fascism written by Anna Koch and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Home after Fascism draws on a rich array of memoirs, interviews, correspondence, and archival research to tell the stories of Italian and German Jews who returned to their home countries after the Holocaust. The book reveals Jews' complex and often changing feelings toward their former homes and highlights the ways in which three distinct national contexts--East German, West German, and Italian--shaped their answers to the question, is this home? Returning Italian and German Jews renegotiated their place in national communities that had targeted them for persecution and extermination. While most Italian Jews remained deeply attached to their home country, German Jews struggled to feel at home in the "country of murderers." Yet, some retained a sense of belonging through German culture and language or felt attached to a specific region or city. Still others looked to the future; socialist and communists of Jewish origin hoped to build a better Germany in the Soviet Occupied Zone. In all three postwar states, surviving Jews fought against persistent antisemitism, faced the challenge of recovering lost homes and possessions, struggled to make sense of their persecution, and tried to find ways to reclaim a sense of belonging. Wide ranging and moving, Home after Fascism enriches our understanding of Jews' homecoming experiences after 1945. It reveals the deep affection and persistent love people feel for their homes, the suffering that comes with losing them, and the challenges of a return.

Book Racism and Antisemitism in Fascist Italy

Download or read book Racism and Antisemitism in Fascist Italy written by Francesco Cassata and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-23 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The racism and antisemitism of Fascist Italy have often been described as ‘mild’, ‘cultural’, ‘spiritual’, and essentially non-violent, especially in comparison with the racial ideology of Nazi Germany. This book challenges this simplistic interpretation with a thorough analysis of the texts and images of the magazine La Difesa della razza (Defence of the race), the principal public voice of Fascist biological racism, which appeared fortnightly between 1938 and 1943 under the editorship of Telesio Interlandi, Mussolini’s ‘unofficial mouthpiece’, with governmental financial support. A negative icon of the propaganda of Fascist racism, La Difesa della razza first appeared in August 1938 shortly before the passing of Italy’s Racial Laws, but had a long gestation. It was the expression of a Fascist cultural milieu – journalists, writers, artists, and architects – headed by Interlandi, whose racism and antisemitism dated back to the end of the First World War. By placing the magazine’s emergence in this longer timescale, and exploring the interrelationships of political action, ideological discourse, and imagery, this book also demonstrates how the project of ‘anthropological revolution’ – building the New Man – was a central element of Italian Fascism, from the very beginning to the deportation of Italian Jews. This new English edition has been thoroughly revised and updated.

Book Populism and Postcolonialism

Download or read book Populism and Postcolonialism written by Adrián Scribano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the interconnections between populism and neoliberalism through the lens of postcolonialism. Its primary focus is to build a distinct understanding of the concept of populism as a political movement in the twenty-first century, interwoven with the lasting effects of colonialism. This volume particularly aims to fill the gap in the current literature by establishing a clear-cut connection between populism and postcolonialism. It sees populism as a contemporary and collective political response to the international crisis of the nation-state’s limited capacity to deal with the burst of global capitalism into everyday life. Writings on Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Italy, France and Argentina offer regional perspectives which, in turn, provide the reader with a deepened global view of the main features of the multiple and complex relations between postcoloniality and populism. This book will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists and political scientists as well as postgraduate students who are interested in the problem of populism in the days of postcolonialism.

Book L est nell ovest

Download or read book L est nell ovest written by Boschiero, Manuel and published by EMIL. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
