Download or read book The Making of Christian Malta written by Anthony Luttrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: Dr Luttrell's work has helped change our understanding of the history of the small islands of Malta and Gozo, providing a more coherent story of the ways in which, during the Middle Ages, a small isolated Muslim community was converted into a more prosperous outpost of Roman Christianity with a unique cultural mixture of Arabic speech and European institutions. This selection of studies places the process within the context of developments in the medieval Mediterranean world and combines archaeological and architectural investigations with work in Maltese, Sicilian and other archives, with a particular focus on ecclesiastical matters; a new introduction brings the subject up to date. This work is of relevance to scholars of Islam and Christianity, while providing insights into the nature of an unusual island community whose significance far exceeds its size.

Download or read book Parish Churches in the Early Modern World written by Andrew Spicer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Europe, the parish church has stood for centuries at the centre of local communities; it was the focal point of its religious life, the rituals performed there marked the stages of life from the cradle to the grave. Nonetheless the church itself artistically and architecturally stood apart from the parish community. It was often the largest and only stone-built building in a village; it was legally distinct being subject to canon law, as well as consecrated for the celebration of religious rites. The buildings associated with the "cure of souls" were sacred sites or holy places, where humanity interacted with the divine. In spite of the importance of the parish church, these buildings have generally not received the same attention from historians as non-parochial places of worship. This collection of essays redresses this balance and reflects on the parish church across a number of confessions - Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed and Anti-Trinitarian - during the early modern period. Rather than providing a series of case studies of individual buildings, each essay looks at the evolution of parish churches in response to religious reform as well as confessional change and upheaval. They examine aspects of their design and construction; furnishings and material culture; liturgy and the use of the parish church. While these essays range widely across Europe, the volume also considers how religious provision and the parish church were translated into a global context with colonial and commercial expansion in the Americas and Asia. This interdisciplinary volume seeks to identify what was distinctive about the parish church for the congregations that gathered in them for worship and for communities across the early modern world.
Download or read book Sent Out into the World written by Michael McGourty and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sent Out into the World contains a liturgical theology for a parish community and the new evangelization that is derived from a reading of The Order of the Dedication of a Church. For this reason, its content can be attributed directly to a liturgical rite of the Catholic Church. It is not the creation of any one person, but rather an exercise in lex orandi, lex credendi. It presents a vision of the parish that comes directly from a rite of the church and focuses the parish community, and its members, on the mission that it has within the body of Christ. Applying the content of the ordo to a parish community, it presents a theology for those communities in which most Catholics meet the Lord and practice their faith. The liturgical theology for a parish community that is presented here focuses all parish communities on Christ and his presence in the liturgical celebrations that take place in the parish churches. As this ritual powerfully reminds the baptized, from the liturgical and sacramental celebrations in which they encounter Christ in their parish church, the faithful are to be sent out into the world as ministers of the new evangelization. By reading this book, every Christian who practices his or her faith within a parish community will be reminded of the mission which they are called to live as members dismissed to go into the world at the end of every eucharistic celebration.

Download or read book Church Religion and Society in Early Modern Italy written by Christopher Black and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Italians in the early sixteenth century challenged Church authority and orthodoxy, stimulated by religious 'Reformation' debates and the lack of agreement on alternatives to Rome's leadership. This book surveys and analyses the various positive and negative responses which led to a re-formation of Church institutions, and parish life for the lay population, especially after the Council of Trent in 1563. Church, Religion and Society in Early Modern Italy: - Discusses the roles of bishops and parochial clergy, seminaries and religious education - Examines religious orders and lay confraternities, particularly in relation to 'good works' or philanthropy - Explains the varied uses of the visual arts, music, processions and festivities to enthuse and educate the laity - Pays special attention to two controversial issues: the Inquisition's role and the stricter enclosure of nuns Comprehensive yet approachable, Christopher F. Black's volume incorporates diverse religious practices and experiences, and explores the successes and failures of reform throughout mainland Italy during a period of religious and social upheaval.

Download or read book Public Uses of Human Remains and Relics in History written by Silvia Cavicchioli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal theme of this volume is the importance of the public use of human remains in a historical perspective. The book presents a series of case studies aimed at offering historiographical and methodological reflections and providing interpretative approaches highlighting how, through the ages and with a succession of complex practices and uses, human remains have been imbued with a plurality of meanings. Covering a period running from late antiquity to the present day, the contributions are the combined results of multidisciplinary research pertaining to the realities of the Italian peninsula, hitherto not investigated with a long-term and multidisciplinary historical perspective. From the relics of great men to the remains of patriots, and from anatomical specimens to the skeletons of the saints: through these case studies the scholars involved have investigated a wide range of human remains (real or reputed) and of meanings attributed to them, in order to decipher their function over the centuries. In doing so, they have traversed the interpretative boundaries of political history, religious history and the history of science, as required by questions aimed at integrating the anthropological, social and cultural aspects of a complex subject.
Download or read book Gli agenti presso la Santa Sede delle comunit e degli Stati stranieri written by a cura di Péter Tusor e Matteo Sanfilippo and published by Edizioni Sette Città. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
