Elle est caractérisée par une destruction rapide et sévère de l'os alvéolaire, pouvant entrainer des mobilités ou des pertes dentaires. Cette pathologie est peu étudiée chez le jeune et sa prise en charge est le plus souvent tardive. Le chirurgien-dentiste est un acteur clef dans le dépistage et la prise en charge de cette pathologie. Afin d'appréhender les enjeux de la parodontite agressive généralisée chez le jeune, nous décrirons au travers de ce travail les caractéristiques cliniques et radiographiques du parodonte de l'enfant et de l'adolescent ainsi que la place de cette pathologie chez le jeune dans les différentes classifications depuis 1982. Nous poursuivrons avec une analyse de la littérature des publications des vingt dernières années afin de décrire la démarche diagnostique, les traitements à mettre en œuvre ainsi que l'évolution de cette pathologie.

D'où la grande difficulté à pouvoir diagnostiquer une parodontite agressive chez le sujet jeune. Pour établir un tel diagnostic, l'anamnèse, l'examen clinique, radiographique et microbiologique complet sont indispensables. Lors de la phase du traitement étiologique, la recherche et l'éradiction des facteurs de riques locaux, régionaux et généraux, sont à prendre en compte car ils pourraient empêcher une réponse optimale au traitement. Après réévaluation, la chirurgie pourra être nécessaire. Mais plus le diagnostic et la phase étiologique sont réalisés tôt plus la réponse au traitement est positive, en effet la lésion en phase active a un potentiel de régénération plus important. L'implication du jeune patient dans son traitement est primordiale,il doit être conscient de l'irréversibilité de sa maladie et des suites qu'il encoure si rien n'est fait. Dans ce genre de pathologie, la relation praticien-patient prend toute son ampleur.
