Download or read book Cultures of Servitude written by Raka Ray and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domestic servitude blurs the divide between family and work, affection and duty, the home and the world. In Cultures of Servitude, Raka Ray and Seemin Qayum offer an ethnographic account of domestic life and servitude in contemporary Kolkata, India, with a concluding comparison with New York City. Focused on employers as well as servants, men as well as women, across multiple generations, they examine the practices and meaning of servitude around the home and in the public sphere. This book shifts the conversations surrounding domestic service away from an emphasis on the crisis of transnational care work to one about the constitution of class. It reveals how employers position themselves as middle and upper classes through evolving methods of servant and home management, even as servants grapple with the challenges of class and cultural distinction embedded in relations of domination and inequality.

Download or read book The Peacetime Use of Foreign Military Installations under Modern International Law written by John Woodliffe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stationing of foreign armed forces abroad in peacetime has been a constant and distinctive feature of the post-1945 bipolar world. This book is the first systematic study of the subject to look beyond the areas of criminal and civil jurisdiction to broader issues of international law arising out of the establishment and use of foreign military installations in time of peace. Implementation of basing agreements between states sending and states hosting foreign armed forces has resulted in a large body of state practice that includes such major international incidents as the U.S. air raid on Libya in 1986 and the U.S. intervention in Panama in 1989. This book assesses the future of foreign military installations against the background of the end of the Cold War, the unification of Germany, the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, and the emerging European security order.

Download or read book Comparative Perspectives on the Chinese Civil Code written by Meiling Huang and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative analysis of Chinese property law as depicted in the newly enacted Chinese Civil Code. The Chinese Civil Code, the first civil code in the history of the People’s Republic of China, was enacted as law in May 2020. Reflecting the growing interest in this code and its provisions to scholars of codification and of comparative private law, it has already been translated into English, German, and Italian. Chinese property law has both local and global features, and this comparative study offers a channel through which to understand Chinese property law, by highlighting both its similarities and differences from other property systems. Broadly speaking, the book brings together two approaches. The first comprises a comprehensive discussion of aspects of Chinese property law, such as ownership, property rights, and secured transactions. The second consists of perspectives from other jurisdictions and provides an assessment of Chinese property law based on other property systems. Containing contributions by both distinguished and young scholars, who are experienced in comparative property law research, the book offers a unique insight into the Chinese Civil Code and, through it, how extra-civilian elements are embodied in a fundamentally civilian legal system. This book will appeal to scholars and students of property law, comparative law, and others with specific interests in law and politics in China.
Download or read book Performing the Renaissance Body written by Sidia Fiorato and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Renaissance period the body emerges as the repository of social and cultural forces and a privileged metaphor for political practices and legal codification. Due to its ambivalent expressive force, it represents the seat and the means for the performance of normative identity and at the same time of alterity. The essays of the collection address the manifold articulations of this topic, demonstrating how the inscription of the body within the discursive spheres of gender identity, sexuality, law, and politics align its materiality with discourses whose effects are themselves material. The aesthetic and performative dimension of law inform the debates on the juridical constitution of authority, as well as its reflection on the formation and the moulding of individual subjectivity. Moreover, the inherently theatrical elements of the law find an analogy in the popular theatre, where juridical practices are represented, challenged, occasionally subverted or created. The works analyzed in the volume, in their ample spectre of topics and contexts aim at demonstrating how in the Renaissance period the body was the privileged focus of the social, legal and cultural imagination.

Download or read book Slavery in International Law written by Jean Allain and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent, in the twenty-first century, of the trafficking conventions and the criminalisation of enslavement before the International Criminal Court, the need to establish the black-letter law dealing with human exploitation has become acute. Slavery in International Law sets out the applicable law of human exploitation in the various sub-areas of international law, including general international law, human rights law, humanitarian law, labour law and the law of the sea; so as to create an overall understanding of what constitutes, in law, slavery and lesser types of human exploitation including: forced labour and servitudes such as debt bondage or servile marriage, as set out in the established definition of ‘trafficking in persons’.
Download or read book The Slavery Conventions written by Jean Allain and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavery has taken on added significance in the twenty-first century as a result of its inclusion in the Statute of the International Criminal Court and it being a component part of the 2001 UN and 2005 Council of Europe conventions against trafficking. With limited and conflicting case-law on the issue, the compiling of the Travaux Préparatoires of the 1926 League of Nations and the 1956 United Nations conventions become essential in seeking to holding States or individuals responsible for violations of international law touching on slavery. The Travaux Préparatoires of the slavery conventions provide insights into the definitions of slavery, the slave trade, and various types of servile statuses while revealing information regarding the various obligations that States have undertaken to suppress the various manifestations of human exploitation.
Download or read book Mysticism in the French Tradition written by Louise Nelstrop and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries secular French scholars started re-engaging with religious ideas, particularly mystical ones. Mysticism in the French Tradition introduces key philosophical undercurrents and trajectories in French thought that underpin and arise from this engagement, as well as considering earlier French contributions to the development of mysticism. Filling a gap in the literature, the book offers critical reflections on French scholarship in terms of its engagement with its mystical and apophatic dimensions. A multiplicity of factors converge to shape these encounters with mystical theology: feminist, devotional and philosophical treatments as well as literary, historical, and artistic approaches. The essays draw these into conversation. Bringing together an international and interdisciplinary range of contributions from both new and established scholars, this book provides access to the melting pot out of which the mystical tradition in France erupted in the twenty-first century, and from which it continues to challenge theology today.
