Book In the Light of Contradiction

Download or read book In the Light of Contradiction written by Roberta Ann Quance and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1926, as a young man of 28 with a growing reputation as an oral poet, Federico Garcia Lorca (1898-1936) toyed with the idea of proving his worth in writing by bringing out a boxed set of three volumes of his verse. Because the Suites , Canciones , and the Poema del cante jondo eventually came out singly (in the case of the Suites , posthumously), readers have not always realised that they formed a single body of work -- one which, Lorca himself was surprised to note, has 'una rarisima unidad', an odd unity of aims and accomplishment. This is poetry which takes up the question of desire in progressively depersonalizing ways, and shows modernism coming into being. Through renunciation, by cutting away the personal and the taboo, Lorca created a poetry that, like no other in Europe, stood between the avant-garde and oral traditions, making their contradictions his truth. Roberta Ann Quance is Senior Lecturer in Spanish at Queen's University, Belfast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised edition of this major writer's complete poetical work And I who was walking with the earth at my waist, saw two snowy eagles and a naked girl. The one was the other and the girl was neither. -from "Qasida of the Dark Doves" Federico García Lorca was the most beloved poet of twentieth-century Spain and one of the world's most influential modernist writers. His work has long been admired for its passionate urgency and haunting evocation of sorrow and loss. Perhaps more persistently than any writer of his time, he sought to understand and accommodate the numinous sources of his inspiration. Though he died at age thirty-eight, he left behind a generous body of poetry, drama, musical arrangements, and drawings, which continue to surprise and inspire. Christopher Maurer, a leading García Lorca scholar and editor, has brought together new and substantially revised translations by twelve poets and translators, placed side by side with the Spanish originals. The seminal volume Poet in New York is also included here in its entirety. This is the most comprehensive collection in English of a poet who—as Maurer writes in his illuminating introduction—"spoke unforgettably of all that most interests us: the otherness of nature, the demons of personal identity and artistic creation, sex, childhood, and death."

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION The complete poetic work of one of the most influential writers in Spanish literature. The figure of Federico García Lorca encompasses, both in Spain and abroad, much more than his literature. In this dazzling collection, the reader will be able to go through the entire stretch of his poetic work: starting with the young Lorca in Book of Poems, Songs and Theory and Play of the Duende, passing through Lorca classics such as Gypsy Ballads, Poem of the Deep Song, the impressive poem Poet in New York, as well as Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, among many others. This edition and its prologues give the reader the necessary tools to understand and contextualize the author, to get closer to the complexity of his work and to enjoy, in a single volume, one of the most relevant Spanish authors of the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is chockfull of student poetry samples and unique ideas, including field trips and a poetry night hike, to spark students' imaginations and inspire them to write poetry. Poetry of Place: Helping Students Write Their Worlds isn't your typical book about teaching poetry. Sure, you'll find plenty of information on helping students learn the fundamentals of writing poetry. But you'll also find creative, innovative ways to engage students in poetry-even those students who may be initially resistant to poetry. Through his extensive work with students in grade school through high school, poet-in-residence Terry Hermsen has learned how to foster a love of poetry by taking the learning out of the classroom-and into students' real lives. With numerous lessons and activities, Hermsen demonstrates how even the most mundane, everyday items-from "stuff" to food to photographs-can spark the imagination of student poets. Truly teacher-tested, Hermsen's lessons draw on his extensive teaching career as well as a semester-long case study conducted in two high school English classes in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. Activities include using literature and art to spark ideas for poems, transforming a routine field trip into a poetry-writing session, and exploring nature and students' surroundings through a poetry night hike. Filled with student examples, this book illustrates that poetry doesn't have to be boring. It can help students develop interpretive and creative thinking skills while helping them better understand the world around them, wherever they may live.
