Nussbaum ofrece un enfoque radicalmente nuevo sobre cómo debe comprenderse la "calidad de vida" y sobre cuál ha de ser el umbral mínimo que los gobiernos deben asegurar a sus ciudadanos y ciudadanas para que puedan desarrollar sus capacidades como seres humanos. La autora se propone ofrecer un esquema de acción de valor universal, aplicable dondequiera que se de una situación de desigualdad y de injusticia.
