Download or read book Where I Live Now written by Lucia Berlin and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 1999 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Where I Live Now, Berlin contemplates the human condition with a compassionate understanding. Berlin's vision is sometimes remorseful, sometimes resigned, always courageous. The elusive nature of happiness is a compelling theme here: the survivors in these stories--many of them society's marginal or excluded people, fighting alcohol or drug addiction, bearing emotional scars--recognize it all too well.

Download or read book Cervantes on Don Quixote written by Emilio Martínez Mata and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commentary on Don Quixote is as universal as affirmations of the novel?s importance, yet until now no study has examined what Cervantes said about it. In the prologue to the first half of the work (1605) the self-conscious author, in a tongue-in-cheek dialogue with the reader and an unconventional friend, makes a good number of comments on his own book. In the opening chapters of Part 2 (1615), the same sort of witty evaluation continues with remarks by Sancho Panza, Sansón Carrasco and Don Quixote in a lively and extended conversation focused on what has been said about Part 1 since its publication and how the characters feel about those readings. The present study carefully examines and compares these and other self-reflective passages to clarify the work?s successes and failures as interpreted by a privileged reader - the author himself.

Download or read book The Secret of the Stairs written by Wade E. Taylor and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secret of the Stairs For those with a burning hunger for more... the Song of Solomon reveals the processes of God in the lives of those who seek to know Him more fully and personally. In The Secret of the Stairs, Wade Taylor sets forth the steps that lead to spiritual maturity and intimate communion with the Lord as depicted in the love relationship of the Song of Solomon. From the call to "Rise up...and come away," to the Bride's declaration, "I am my Beloved's and His desire is toward me," the author presents clear spiritual insight and its practical outworking based on personal experience. This book stands in contrast to the quick answers and easy methods popular today. The Psalmist speaks," Deep calls to deep." The deeps of God are heard only in the depths of the spirit of man. This book opens the reader to a path, which leads from these depths to the mountaintop with our Lord. More than a book to read, it is food for the spirit.

Book excerpt: Now an Academy Award-winning Netflix film by Jane Campion, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst: Thomas Savage's acclaimed Western is "a pitch-perfect evocation of time and place" (Boston Globe) for fans of East of Eden and Brokeback Mountain. Set in the wide-open spaces of the American West, The Power of the Dog is a stunning story of domestic tyranny, brutal masculinity, and thrilling defiance from one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in American literature. The novel tells the story of two brothers — one magnetic but cruel, the other gentle and quiet — and of the mother and son whose arrival on the brothers’ ranch shatters an already tenuous peace. From the novel’s startling first paragraph to its very last word, Thomas Savage’s voice — and the intense passion of his characters — holds readers in thrall. "Gripping and powerful...A work of literary art." —Annie Proulx, from her afterword
