Book excerpt: This is not just a biography novel, but a social drama with elements of healthy humor. As the author of the book La Vita Kosoru says: "... in front of you is a plate on which ripe apples lie and everyone will find their core, their close and painful and surprisingly familiar fruit in this story." It is a fascinating, educational, tragic and at the same time bright path of a Ukrainian gypsy who lost her parents at the age of three. This novel reveals such important and unknown secrets of the world of gypsy communities as the cruel internal laws that lead to the inevitable and painful death of many women in camps. This novel touches on the political questions of several countries at the same time: Ukraine and Austria. He describes clearly and dynamically for many unpleasant topics, such as: an orphanage and atrocities by his educators; domestic violence, absolute patriarchy with its destructive violence; Homosexuality and open positioning of personality in society; Refugee problems and countries' true attitudes towards foreigners, the gradual uncovering of the purulent system and the dismantling of the myth of global compassion; Maternity issues about what it is like to be a single mother, a lesbian mother, a refugee mother while maintaining the light, love, respect, health and laughter of your children. You can discover all this and much more, which probably corresponds to your mind, or recognize yourself in these lines, maybe get an answer, remember a familiar pain or accept a slight smile while reading the book "La mia Vita".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ah, alas!" The "faithful shepherd" Mirtillo's woeful sigh of unrequited love, delivered with outrageous musical dissonances, has rung through the ages since the first publication of Claudio Monteverdi's madrigal "Cruda Amarilli" in 1605. But there is far more to the composer's nine books of madrigals than dissonant progressions--they are an integral part of the intellectual, artistic, and practical worlds of creation and performance in Italian musical and literary culture of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. While Monteverdi is also recognized for his operas and sacred works, it is no surprise that the madrigal dominated his output through his long career in Cremona, Mantua, and Venice. Author Tim Carter illustrates how the composer's wonderfully witty settings of Italian verse ran the gamut from compositions in the traditional polyphonic style for five unaccompanied voices to those in more modern idioms for one or more singers and instruments. Their poets included the major figures of the day--Torquato Tasso, Battista Guarini, and Giambattista Marino--as well as the classics, not least of all Petrarch, with texts that embraced all the current literary genres from lyric through epic to dramatic. Monteverdi also repeatedly asked and answered the fundamental question of any musical setting of poetry concerning the relationship between poetic and musical voice(s). Carter offers a more holistic perspective than has been adopted in the partial studies of Monteverdi's madrigals to date and moves far beyond conventional views of the composer and his work. He considers how Monteverdi engaged with poetry, with sound, and with the performers for whom he was writing. As Carter shows, Monteverdi was irascible, exasperating, and prone to error. Yet his astonishing musical mind was also inventive, playful, and capable of the most extraordinary wit--producing madrigals that continue to invite new approaches both to their study and to their performance.

Book Drafting Italy

Download or read book Drafting Italy written by Marco Rovinello and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive history of conscription and the military in Italy from the Restoration to the eve of WWI. The comparative and transnational approach enables this work to compare and contrast the Italian experience with that of many other countries in the world as well as understand transfers and the adaptive and imitative processes that emerge when conscription and the military are viewed from an Italian perspective. Peacetime and wartime recruitment, military life, culture, justice and civil-military relationships are analysed using a wide range of sources and an interdisciplinary approach that combines top-down and bottom-up perspectives. This enables the book not only to assess the contribution the military has made to the country in terms of state-building, nation building, modernization, pedagogical and disciplinary models, gender identity and roles, but also to reconsider the standard taxonomies as well as some established evolutionary models of the armies. Moreover, the Italian military is seen as an internally complex world that is incapable of defining its own one-dimensional identity or of imposing any such identity on its members. Consequently, it is an element in the history of a country that is substantially the same as any other such element and thus important in people’s collective and individual lives whether or not they are in uniform. Rather than being an object of study in and of itself, the military becomes a vantage point from which to observe the Italian history in the long 19th century. Therefore, this book can be profitably read by professional military historians and non-specialist readers interested in the military, as well as by all scholars working on Italian pre- and post-unification political, institutional, socio-economic, cultural and gender history.

Book The Practicalities of Producing the Play Mozart with Music by Franz von Supp

Download or read book The Practicalities of Producing the Play Mozart with Music by Franz von Supp written by Lucinda Bray and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1854, the originator of Viennese Operetta, Franz von Suppé created the music for a new play by Leonhart Wohlmuth. It is part of a forgotten art form where the music underlines and accompanies the action on stage in a similar way to a soundtrack for a film. While the music works very well in the present day, the real challenge is to modernise the script to make it relevant and interesting for a modern audience. Originally written in early 19th century German, the script sounds outdated and received a less than positive reception at its original outing. Its dialogue is more in keeping with Opera and required significant work to make it palatable to a contemporary audience. The project on which this book is based maintained the music by Suppé as indicated in the manuscript score, while translating and adapting the German script by Wohlmuth into a version more interesting in the present day.
