Book An Evening When Alone

Download or read book An Evening When Alone written by Michael O'Brien and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that will greatly enhance understanding of the situation of single women in the nineteenth-century South, An Evening When Alone presents the journals of four very different women who, although their lives were worlds apart, each lived and wrote in the South during the years 1827-67. Intimate and revealing, these journals provide refreshing insight into the joys and travails of "ordinary" single women in the nineteenth century South: courtship, disappointed love, illness, the gratifications and pains of female friendship, the grief of the Civil War, the ambivalences of family life, and the difficulty and consolation of religion.

Book Genius Envy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adrianna M. Paliyenko
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2017-01-03
  • ISBN : 0271079193
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Genius Envy written by Adrianna M. Paliyenko and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Genius Envy, Adrianna M. Paliyenko uncovers a forgotten history: the multiplicity and diversity of nineteenth-century French women’s poetic voices. Conservative critics of the time attributed the phenomenon of genius to masculinity and dismissed the work of female authors as “feminine literature.” Despite the efforts of leading thinkers, critics, and literary historians to erase women from the pages of literary history, Paliyenko shows how these female poets invigorated the debate about the origins of genius and garnered considerable recognition in their time for their creativity and bold aesthetic ideas. This fresh account of French women poets’ contributions to literature probes the history of their critical reception. The result is an encounter with the texts of celebrated writers such as Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Anaïs Ségalas, Malvina Blanchecotte, Louisa Siefert, and Louise Ackermann. Glimpses at the different stages of each poet’s career show that these women explicitly challenged the notion of genius as gender specific, thus advocating for their rightful place in the canon. A prodigious contribution to studies of nineteenth-century French poetry, Paliyenko’s book reexamines the reception of poetry by women within and beyond its original context. This balanced and comprehensive treatment of their work uncovers the multiple ways in which women poets sought to define their place in history.

Book Aspects of the Secular Cantata in Late Baroque Italy

Download or read book Aspects of the Secular Cantata in Late Baroque Italy written by Michael Talbot and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors in this volume choose aspects of the cantata relevant to their special interests in order to say new things about the works, whether historical, analytical, bibliographical, discographical or performance-based. The prime focus is on Italian-born composers working between 1650 and 1750 and many key figures are considered, among them Tomaso Albinoni, Giovanni Bononcini, Giovanni Legrenzi, Benedetto Marcello, Alessandro Scarlatti, Alessandro Stradella, Leonardo Vinci and Antonio Vivaldi. The book aims to stimulate interest in, and to win converts to, this genre, which in its day equalled the instrumental sonata in importance, and in which more than a few composers invested a major part of their creativity.
