El ensayo sobre La trascendencia del Ego fue escrito en 1934, en parte durante la permanencia de Sartre en Berlín, mientras estudiaba la fenomenología de Husserl. En 1935-1936 escribió a la vez La imaginación y Lo imaginario (publicadas respectivamente en 1936 y 1940), después, en 1937-1938, La Psyché de la cual tenía ya la idea en 1934. De La Psyché separa lo que deviene el Esbozo de una teoría de las emociones y que fue publicado en 1939. Recordemos, por último, que El Ser y la Nada continúa inmediatamente y que apareció en 1934.
