Book excerpt: De plus en plus, les oeuvres en prose sont appréciées pour la multiplicité des langages--voire des langues--qu'elles font cohabiter. Toutefois, s'il est vrai que la prose romanesque mobilise par définition une pluralité de discours et de langues, les conventions littéraires actuelles n'en logent pas moins ce plurilinguisme à l'enseigne d'une langue tutélaire qui le contient et le limite autant qu'elle l'inclut. Plusieurs langues peuvent-elles tour à tour, dans un même texte, servir de véhicule à la relation d'un récit? Peuvent-elles cohabiter en toute réciprocité? La présente thèse est le résultat d'une enquête sur des littératures qui mettent en question la notion de langue principale. À l'aide d'outils théoriques inspirés de la traductologie, d'études sociolmguistiques sur le code-switching, des approches bakhtmiennes de la littérature et de la critique postcoioniale, elle analyse--sous l'appellation de colinguisme--des textes en prose dont la narration mobilise à la fois le français et l'anglais. Y sont abordés: Between , de la Britannique Christine Brooke-Rose; les oeuvres anglo-québécoises Heroine de Gail Scott et Hellman's Scrapbook de Robert Majzels; enfin, L'homme invisible/The Invisible Man du Franco-Ontarien Patrice Desbiens, et Bloupe de l'Acadien Jean Babineau. Par-delà des disparités contextuelles manifestes, il ressort de l'analyse de ces textes que les enjeux de la cohabitation des langues tiennent à l'appartenance à des espaces littéraires et culturels dont la narration colingue, afin de pouvoir s'y inscrire, doit forcer la redéfinition. Les textes étudiés cherchent à créer un espace de signification permettant de réunir plusieurs langues sans les soumettre les unes aux autres. Par ailleurs, tout en sapant l'autorité de la langue principale, ils tirent parti de son statut prééminent. Mise aux côtés d'autres langues aptes à remplir ses fonctions, la langue tutélaire perd sa neutralité, et devient sujette à un questionnement sur ce qui motive sa prépondérance dans le texte. Dans ces textes, le partage difficile des langues dans la narration devient une métaphore puissante de leur hiérarchisation à l'échelle sociale, tout comme il ouvre sur la possibilité de contrer cette hiérarchisation en développant de nouveaux modes d'interaction entre les langues. Plus qu'une réalité actualisée, le colinguisme fonctionne alors comme un appel.
