Sin embargo, hubo que esperar más de treinta años para que, en su seminario sobre la angustia, produzca y formalice el concepto psicoanalítico que rompe con la tradición psiquiátrica francesa que había hecho de la expresión passage à l'acte una categoría meramente descriptiva, cargada de referencias morales, criminológicas y despojada de valor teórico. Producción laboriosa, sinuosa por momentos, cuyas fases siguen el ritmo con que avanza su enseñanza en psicoanálisis. El rigor de su proceder, tanto en sus apreciaciones clínicas como en su elaboración teórica, hace posible que el psicoanálisis, frente al problema que el pasaje al acto conlleva en esos ámbitos, no naufrague frente a los mismos impasses ante los que fracasó la psiquiatría. Rigor que encuentra, en la construcción de un concepto adecuado de estructura, la distinción de los tres registros y la invención del objeto a, la balsa teórica que evitó el naufragio, el de recaer en clasificaciones imaginarias, puramente fenoménicas, que llevarían al psicoanálisis a diagnósticos descriptivos que lo distancian de la clínica concebida como demostrativa de lo radical del sujeto del inconsciente, inaprehensible por una clasificación. La fascinación que provoca encontrarse en la práctica con el pasaje al acto en su variedad clínica y sus consecuencias ha sido motivación más que suficiente para emprender este estudio. Quizá sea el agujero en lo real que produce lo que convoca a estudiar, leer y finalmente escribir. De allí los interrogantes clínicos, para pensar la práctica y las alternativas, casi nulas a veces, ante las que nos sitúa lo real de nuestra experiencia. Aún así, casi parafraseando a Lacan, avanzar en este estudio conlleva un no retroceder ante lo interpelante del pasaje al acto.

In his reflections, which spring from his experience teaching at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, questions of textual and philosophical interpretation are intertwined. Rescuing the truth value of Hegel's work is a recurring theme of the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, and nowhere is this goal pursued with more insight than in these three studies. It is the elaboration of this method of interpretation, a negative dialectic, that was Adorno's underlying goal. Adorno's efforts to salvage the contemporaneity of Hegel's thought form part of his response to the increasingly tight net of social control in the aftermath of World War II. In this, his work is related to the very different attempts to undermine reified thinking undertaken by the various French theorists. The continued development of what Adorno called "the administered world" has only increased the relevance of his efforts.

The Parallax View is Slavoj Žižek's most substantial theoretical work to appear in many years; Žižek himself describes it as his magnum opus. Parallax can be defined as the apparent displacement of an object, caused by a change in observational position. Žižek is interested in the "parallax gap" separating two points between which no synthesis or mediation is possible, linked by an "impossible short circuit" of levels that can never meet. From this consideration of parallax, Žižek begins a rehabilitation of dialectical materialism. Modes of parallax can be seen in different domains of today's theory, from the wave-particle duality in quantum physics to the parallax of the unconscious in Freudian psychoanalysis between interpretations of the formation of the unconscious and theories of drives. In The Parallax View, Žižek, with his usual astonishing erudition, focuses on three main modes of parallax: the ontological difference, the ultimate parallax that conditions our very access to reality; the scientific parallax, the irreducible gap between the phenomenal experience of reality and its scientific explanation, which reaches its apogee in today's brain sciences (according to which "nobody is home" in the skull, just stacks of brain meat—a condition Žižek calls "the unbearable lightness of being no one"); and the political parallax, the social antagonism that allows for no common ground. Between his discussions of these three modes, Žižek offers interludes that deal with more specific topics—including an ethical act in a novel by Henry James and anti-anti-Semitism. The Parallax View not only expands Žižek's Lacanian-Hegelian approach to new domains (notably cognitive brain sciences) but also provides the systematic exposition of the conceptual framework that underlies his entire work. Philosophical and theological analysis, detailed readings of literature, cinema, and music coexist with lively anecdotes and obscene jokes.

Delivered over nine sessions in 1964 and 1965 at the École Normale Supérieure, these lectures offer a glimpse of the young Derrida first coming to terms with the German philosopher and his magnum opus, Being and Time. They provide not only crucial insight into the gestation of some of Derrida’s primary conceptual concerns—indeed, it is here that he first uses, with some hesitation, the word “deconstruction”—but an analysis of Being and Time that is of extraordinary value to readers of Heidegger or anyone interested in modern philosophy. Derrida performs an almost surgical reading of the notoriously difficult text, marrying pedagogical clarity with patient rigor and acting as a lucid guide through the thickets of Heidegger’s prose. At this time in intellectual history, Heidegger was still somewhat unfamiliar to French readers, and Being and Time had only been partially translated into French. Here Derrida mostly uses his own translations, giving his own reading of Heidegger that directly challenges the French existential reception initiated earlier by Sartre. He focuses especially on Heidegger’s Destruktion (which Derrida would translate both into “solicitation” and “deconstruction”) of the history of ontology, and indeed of ontology as such, concentrating on passages that call for a rethinking of the place of history in the question of being, and developing a radical account of the place of metaphoricity in Heidegger’s thinking. This is a rare window onto Derrida’s formative years, and in it we can already see the philosopher we’ve come to recognize—one characterized by a bravura of exegesis and an inventiveness of thought that are particularly and singularly his.
