Transfigurations brings our cultural obsession with film violence into a renewed dialogue with contemporary theory. Grønstad argues that the use of violence in Hollywood films should be understood semiotically rather than viewed realistically; Tranfigurations thus alters both our methodology of reading violence in films and the meanings we assign to them, depicting violence not as a self-contained incident, but as a convoluted network of our own cultural ideologies and beliefs.

Book excerpt: A wide-ranging consideration of the nature and significance of Pushkin's African heritage Roughly in the year 1705, a young African boy, acquired from the seraglio of the Turkish sultan, was transported to Russia as a gift to Peter the Great. This child, later known as Abram Petrovich Gannibal, was to become Peter's godson and to live to a ripe old age, having attained the rank of general and the status of Russian nobility. More important, he was to become the great-grandfather of Russia's greatest national poet, Alexander Pushkin. It is the contention of the editors of this book, borne out by the essays in the collection, that Pushkin's African ancestry has played the role of a "wild card" of sorts as a formative element in Russian cultural mythology; and that the ways in which Gannibal's legacy has been included in or excluded from Pushkin's biography over the last two hundred years can serve as a shifting marker of Russia's self-definition. Peintre et graveur, historien de l'art, il était officier de la Légion d'honneur et de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Docteur de l'Université d'Alger, il fut professeur à l'École nationale des beaux-arts d'Alger puis, à Paris, à partir de 1960, chef d'atelier de gravure à l'eau-forte à l'École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, dont il faisait partie du jury. Il fut en outre, de nombreuses années durant, professeur au Collège Estienne. Dès la fin de ses études classiques, il se destine à la peinture. Les ateliers de Jean-Paul Laurens, de Maurice Denis et de René-X. Prévert l'accueillirent successivement. Très vite, il exposa au Salon des Tuileries, puis des Indépendants, et enfin au Salon d'Automne, dont il fut membre du Comité pendant une vingtaine d'années. Parallèlement, il anima la Société des peintres-graveurs français, dont il était secrétaire, la Société de la jeune gravure contemporaine, et la Société de l'estampe. Il participa à de nombreuses expositions particulières avec ses amis Friez, Waroquier, Laprade, Brianchon, Lecaron, etc., tant en France qu'à l'étranger. Actuellement, on trouve quelques-unes de ses œuvres au Musée d'art moderne, dans les collections de la ville de Paris, au British Museum, dans de nombreux musées de France et à l'étranger. La Bibliothèque nationale, quant à elle, conserve son œuvre gravée. Peintre, graveur, professeur, il fut également conférencier et se fit entendre sur son sujet favori : "La gravure", à la Sorbonne, à l'Université de Nimègue, à Amsterdam, à Haarlem, profitant d'un séjour prolongé qu'il fit à l'Institut français des Pays-Bas, pour y faire mieux connaître la gravure française. Historien de l'art, il a publié plusieurs ouvrages sur Goya, Daumier, Rembrandt, Dürer, ainsi que "La gravure", qui reste son œuvre écrite maîtresse. Jean-Eugène Bersier est mort le 23 octobre 1978.
