Each brief chapter analyses how the individual status was conditioned or created by contemporary EU law, or how the process of European integration modified the traditional juridical definition of the respective status. Has the concept of legal status now acquired a new function? What role has EU law played in developing a new modern function for the concept of individual status? Are the selection of a specific individual status by EU law and the proliferation of such statuses, which is synonymous with the creation of new privileges, collectively undermining the goal of achieving substantive equality between EU citizens? Book excerpt: Problèmes de Conflits de Lois en Matière de Filiation, Jacques Foyer Jacques Foyer, Professor at the University of Paris II, notes in introduction of his course that it can be enlightening to compare the different modern methods of solution of the conflict of laws regarding filiation. The study of the different systems shows that there exist at least three methods to contradict the classic choice-of-law rule. The course is structured around the analysis of these three methods. Firstly, it is the criticism of the rigid character and the unpredictability of the traditional rule that triggers the temptation of a manipulation of the choice of law rule. The author then points out that one could question its abstract and arbitrary character, which leads on the one hand to an attempt to hierarchization, and on the other hand, to a diversification of the choice-of-law rules. Lastly, it is the principle of the foreign law's purpose to govern legal relationships in the same way as the lex fori that is questioned, which leads to its partial elimination to the profit of a more or less systematic application of the territorial law or of the one of the court hearing the action. General Course on Private International Law, Friedrich K. Juenger According to Friedrich Juenger, Professor at the University of California in Davis, the outstanding characteristic of the conflict of laws is the lack of consensus on the discipline's goals and methods. He proposes to put the accent in his course on the events for which public international law must find a solution in order to avoid the constant danger that threatens the discipline: that is, to become a simple academic game. Three examples of reported cases and the kinds of issues they raise are given in the Introduction. Professor Juenger next gives a detailed historical overview of the conflict of laws, from Antiquity to Mancini. In addition, the author presents the emergence of new orthodoxies, or rather proposes to re-examine the traditional doctrines, and points out the advantages of a teleological approach. That allows him to revisit the three cases mentioned in the Introduction. Lawyers as well as scientists, adds the author, must mobilize their immense resources, bearing in mind that the rule of law should never disregard moral appreciation.

Book excerpt: This book centres on the ways in which the concept of imperativeness has found expression in private international law (PIL) and discusses “imperative norms”, and “imperativeness” as their intrinsic quality, examining the rules or principles that protect fundamental interests and/or the values of a state so as to require their application at any cost and without exceptions. Discussing imperative norms in PIL means referring to international public policy and overriding mandatory rules: in this book the origins, content, scope and effects of both these forms of imperativeness are analyzed in depth. This is a subject deserving further study, considering that very divergent opinions are still emerging within academia and case law regarding the differences between international public policy and overriding mandatory rules as well as with regard to their way of functioning. By using an approach mainly based on an analysis of the case law of the CJEU and of the courts of the various European countries, the book delves into the origin of imperativeness since Roman law, explains how imperative norms have evolved in the different conceptions of private international law, and clarifies the foundation of the differences between international public policy and overriding mandatory rules and how these concepts are used in EU Regulations on PIL (and in the practice related to these sources of law). On account of that correlation, identity has become one of the crucial problems in the history of the Italian Jewish community. This volume aims to discuss the setting of construction and formation--the family-- and focuses on women's experiences, specifically. Indeed, women were called through emancipation to ensure the continuity of Jewish religious and cultural heritage. It speaks to the growing interest for Women's and Gender Studies in Italy, and for the research on women's organizations which testify to the strong presence of Jewish women in the emancipation movement. These women formed a sisterhood that fought to obtain rights that were until then only accorded to men, and they were deeply socially engaged in such a way that was crucial to the overall process of the integration of Jews into Italian society.

Such a topic is crucial for understanding both Italian imperial rule and the complex dynamics of the different colonial societies where several actors, like notables, political leaders, minorities, etc., were involved. The chapters gathered in the book constitute an unprecedented account of a heterogeneous geographical area. The cases of Eritrea, Libya, Dodecanese, Ethiopia, and Albania confirm that citizenship and subjecthood in the colonial context were ductile political tools, which were structured according to the orientations of the Metropole and the challenges that came from the colonial societies, often swinging between submission, cooptation to the colonial power, and resistance. On one hand, the book offers an account of the different policies of citizenship implemented in the Italian colonies, in particular the construction of gradated forms of citizenship, the repression and expulsion of dissidents, the systems of endearment of local people and cooptation of the elites, and the racialization of legal status. On the other, it deals with the various answers coming from the local populations in terms of resistance, negotiation, and construction of social identity.

Maria Pierri follows Freud’s early interest in "thought-transmission," now known as telepathy. Freud’s private investigations led to discussions with other leading figures like Carl Jung and Sándor Ferenczi, with whom he held a "dialogue of the unconsciouses." Freud’s and Ferenczi’s work assessed how fortune tellers could read the past from a client, inspiring their investigations into countertransference, the analytic relationship, unconscious communication, and mother-infant relationality. Both Freud and Ferenczi tried in different ways to come close to understanding the infant’s occult link with the mother and their secret primal language: their research on thought transference may be identified as a matrix of the developments of current psychoanalysis. Pierri clearly links modern psychoanalytic practice with Freud’s interests in the occult using primary sources, some of which have never previously been published in English. Occultism and the Origins of Psychoanalysis will be of great interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training, as well as academics and scholars of Freudian ideas, psychoanalytic theory, the history of psychology, and the occult.
