La venue au monde d'un enfant était perçue comme un don des dieux, mais elle ne mettait pas fin à l'inquiétude des parents. On estime, en effet, qu'un tiers des enfants n'atteignait pas l'âge de 5 ans en dépit des efforts conjugués des parents, médecins et magiciens pour les protéger.Mère et nouveau-né passaient par divers rites de passage qui procédaient de leur (ré-)intégration dans la communauté. Le nourrisson, source de multiples attentions, y occupait toutefois une place à part. Il n'obtenait un véritable statut social que lorsque les menaces (sur)naturelles planant sur sa vie et sa santé étaient enfin écartées, c'est-à-dire lorsqu'il sortait de la petite enfance.Richement documenté et illustré par quelque 80 planches et dessins, cet ouvrage offre un éclairage inédit sur la maternité et la petite enfance en Égypte ancienne.Amandine Marshall est docteur en égyptologie et chercheur associé à la Mission Archéologique Française de Thèbes Ouest.
