Book The Whispering of Ghosts

Download or read book The Whispering of Ghosts written by Boris Cyrulnik and published by Other Press (NY). This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One out of every two people will experience trauma, says psychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik, and one in ten will remain a prisoner of that suffering. Why are some children permanently damaged by difficult childhoods, while others grow up into secure, creative, loving adults? This book, based on Dr. Cyrulnik's broad experience with victims of childhood distress, offers a message of hope for everyone concerned about the impact of deprivation and such traumatic events as separation, emotional or sexual abuse, and violence in the environment. The ghosts of the past keep on whispering to the child within the adult. Through dozens of moving, vivid examples, Dr. Cyrulnik describes the ingredients of resilience, the ability to heal the wounded self and move on, to make sense of what happened back then and form new emotional and social ties. Affection is such a vital need, he writes, that those who were deprived of it will attach themselves intensely to anything that rekindles a spark of life, whatever the cost. From the earliest parent-child bonding to the sexual turbulence of the teenage years, this book shows what makes for success or failure in the struggle to gain freedom from early pain.

A range of papers by European researchers and practitioners also discuss general issues facing all countries and effective policy responses, including comparative legal processes and obstacles, therapeutic help for victims and their families, work with perpetrators, collection and use of information on child sex offenders, and telephone helplines for children and young people.

Book Metropolitan Mosaics and Melting Pots

Download or read book Metropolitan Mosaics and Melting Pots written by Adlai Murdoch and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration is both a demographic and a cultural phenomenon. As such, it both reshapes the global village and subverts the all-encompassing vision of the city, a space split between the blending of all new cultures and the need felt by many migrants to maintain their traditions and thereby contribute to a multicultural mosaic. This series of essays explores how the concepts of the melting-pot and the mosaic have shaped the representation of Paris and Montreal in francophone literatures. Migrant movements to these cities from the Caribbean, the Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, Quebec, Indochina, and the Indian Ocean have produced new groups of intersecting cultures. Under the dual influences of their native and host countries, migrants have produced an innovative and multifaceted literature that reflects their composite world-view. Their writing poses pressing questions of ethnicity, immigration, integration, and citizenship, and challenges longstanding notions both of the concept of the city and of how its spaces embody and articulate Frenchness in the face of ongoing change. Such shifts produce changes not only in the diasporic culture, but in the national culture as well, through creolization processes. These shifting identities increasingly destabilize current notions of national membership and social and cultural belonging, since we can no longer presume a direct correspondence between place, culture, language and identity. They also pose new questions of national identity and difference as the immigrant presence expands and inflects the cosmopolitan pluralism of today’s societies.

It doesn't take long for the charming little girl to work her way into the hearts of all the residents on this cozy little street. Does it really matter that she's invisible? The child's mother delivered a stillborn, fatherless baby. Two months later, she becomes convinced that her child has returned from heaven. The neighbors don't have the heart to tell her otherwise, and so they play along. After all, "why bring somebody pain when it's so easy to bring joy instead?" ...But is Lydie really a figment?
