Book The Art of Objects

Download or read book The Art of Objects written by Luca Cottini and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Objects is a cultural history of early Italian industrialism, set against the political, social, and intellectual background of post-unification Italy, and a cutting-edge investigation of the formation of Italy's industrial culture at the turn of the twentieth century. Providing a close examination of several objects of mass consumption, including watches, photographs, bicycles, gramophones, cigarettes, and toys, author Luca Cottini explores the transformation of these objects from commercial items into aesthetic and philosophical icons. By focusing on the cultural significance of these objects as they enter the market and appear in contemporary works of art and literature, The Art of Objects outlines a comprehensive view of the age between the unification of Italy and Fascism, encompassing production and consumption, aesthetics and entrepreneurship, industry and the humanistic tradition. The observation of the slow formation of new languages, practices, and experiences around these objects also provides valuable insight into the creative laboratory of Italy's early industrial culture. By reconstructing the origins of the Italian culture of design, the book ultimately investigates Italy's critical reception of industrialism, the nation's so-called "imperfect" modernization, and its ongoing quest for an original way to modernity.

Download or read book Fellini s Films and Commercials written by Frank Burke and published by Intellect (UK). This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federico Fellini's distinct style delighted generations of film viewers and inspired filmmakers and artists around the world. In Fellini's Films and Commercials, renowned Fellini scholar Frank Burke presents a film-by-film analysis of the famed director's cinematic output from a theoretical perspective. He explores Fellini's movement from relatively classic filmmaking to modernist reflexivity, and then to "postmodern reproduction." Burke moves from analysis of stories told from a relatively "objective" standpoint, to increased concentration on Fellini-as-author and on the cinematic apparatus, to Fellini's dismantling of authorship and the cinematic apparatus, to his postmodern signifying strategies. Grounded in poststructuralist approaches to texts and signification, Burke shows that Fellini is profoundly readable, if extremely complex. Revisiting Burke's 1996 monograph, this revised and updated edition includes a new preface and an additional chapter on the filmmaker's work on commercials. Elegantly written and thoroughly researched, this book is essential reading for any Fellini fan or scholar.

Book The Invention of Modern Italian Literature

Download or read book The Invention of Modern Italian Literature written by Gino Tellini and published by . This book was released on 2007-10-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its undeniable impact on modern literature, there are very few comprehensive studies of literary works produced in Italy from the end of the eighteenth- to the twentieth century. The Invention of Modern Italian Literature examines the methods of select Italian writers and considers their impact on the literary world. Touching upon some of the most prominent and influential writers in Italy over the last three hundred years, Gino Tellini looks at the unique creative processes of each, as well as at the dominant trends that have come to characterize modern Italian literature. Examining different genres such as autobiography, letters, poetry, and the novel, this study stresses the ways in which Italian writers achieved a hybrid of various styles of writing. This cross-genre approach had a significant influence on writers around the world and has come to be one of the defining characteristics of modern literature. Among specific writers and works dealt with are Vittorio Alfieri's autobiography, The Final Letters by Jacopo Ortis by Ugo Foscolo, the theatre of Alessandro Manzoni, the letters of Giacomo Leopardi, the novels of Giovanni Verga, and The Weaver by Giovanni Pascoli. As an investigation of new expressive processes and stylistic experiences, The Invention of Modern Italian Literature situates prominent Italian writers within the context of modern literature.

Book The Holiday Trilogy

Download or read book The Holiday Trilogy written by Carlo Goldoni and published by Marsilio Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three plays that make up The Holiday Trilogy are among the most outstanding works of Goldoni's maturity. Written in 1761, and published here for the first time in English, these plays take us behind the scenes as two Northern Italian families and their respective entourages prepare for a fashionable stay in the country, and in the process forsake all their cherished precepts of bourgeois prudence and parsimony. What starts out as a relatively straightforward satire, rather benevolently castigating the middle class for its craven infatuation with appearances, later develops into a scathing indictment of its entire system of values, with each of the three plays contributing an ever bleaker portrayal of social fatuity and mendacity. At the mercy of fashion's every whim, the middle class is mercilessly caught in the act of aping the aristocracy, clumsily grappling with trends it cannot comprehend, ignorant as it is of the underlying codes of savoir-faire. But Goldoni takes comedy's traditional decision of the bourgeoisie's fashion foibles to an extreme which can only be ascribed to sheer comical genius. Indeed, as this tripartite work unfolds, the extent to which Goldoni succeeds in subverting the very constrictions of his favorite genre becomes increasingly evident, the bittersweet finale constituting a fittingly ambivalent rendition of comedy's requisite happy end. The Holiday Trilogy is the first of a series of volumes that Marsilio plans to devote to the works of the great Venetian playwright, under the editorship of Franco Fido, to commemorate the bicentennial of Goldoni's death. Anthony Oldcorn's version of the Trilogy received one of the 1993 Kayden Translation Awards.

He favors the innkeeper Coronato due to his stable income and secure lifestyle, rather than the poor shoemaker Crispino, who has won the true affection of the sharp-tongued damsel. Other lovers emerge as the play progresses: Baron del Cedro is in love with the elegant daughter of the wealthy widow Senora Geltrude, whose favor is an advantage to all who obtain it.
