Book excerpt: La diffusion Brillouin stimulée (DBS), résultant d'une interaction acousto-optique, est connue pour limiter la puissance transmise dans une fibre optique, mais sa grande sensibilité aux conditions extérieures la rend très intéressante dans le domaine des capteurs distribués. La nouvelle génération de fibres optiques microstructurées, apparue à la fin des années 90, présente un potentiel intéressant pour les interactions acousto-optiques car la succession périodique de micro canaux d'air emprisonnés dans la silice permet de confiner simultanément les modes optiques et acoustiques. A travers différentes expériences, ce travail de doctorat présente une étude détaillée de l'influence de la microstructure air-silice sur la dynamique de l'effet Brillouin tant dans la dimension transverse que longitudinale de la fibre photonique. Nous avons ainsi mis en évidence l'excitation de modes acoustiques trans- verses localisés dans le coeur de la fibre et piégés par la microstructure, à des fréquences hypersonores dépassant parfois le GHz, en bon accord avec le calcul numérique par éléments finis des modes acoustiques de la fibre. De plus, les mesures du spectre de rétrodiffusion Brillouin stimulée ont également révélé le caractère acoustique multimode ainsi que l'augmentation significative du seuil Brillouin dans la plupart des fibres étudiées. Ces résultats ont été confirmés par des mesures distribuées du spectre Brillouin, qui ont montré la grande sensibilité aux contraintes mécaniques des fréquences Brillouin. En annexe à cette thèse, nous avons étudié la génération de supercontinuum, la diffusion Raman et le mélange à quatre ondes dans de courtes longueurs de fibres microstructurées.

Elle resulte de la diffusion des ondes lasers par interaction avec les ondes acoustiques presentes dans le milieu et se manifeste essentiellement par la generation d'une onde Stokes retrodiffusee. Le decalage frequentiel de cette onde par rapport a l'onde laser est appele frequence Brillouin et est proche de 11 GHz a une longueur d'onde 1550 nm. L'analyse de l'onde Stokes permet l'etude des effets modifiant les caracteristiques acoustiques, telles que la temperature et la contrainte. C'est pourquoi la DBS est largement utilisee pour la realisation de capteurs distribues. Dans ce present travail, une etude generale des proprietes de la DBS dans les fibres est proposee. A partir de la technique pompe-sonde, la courbe de gain Brillouin est analysee pour des temperatures allant de 1K jusqu'a temperature ambiante. La potentialite unique des capteurs Brillouin fibres des tres basses temperatures est demontree. Les resultats en pression hydrostatique montrent une relation parfaitement lineaire avec la frequence Brillouin."

Book excerpt: Cette thèse de doctorat porte sur la conception et la fabrication de microfils optiques de silice par la technique de fusion et d'étirage de fibres optiques standards, ainsi qu'une étude détaillée de leurs propriétés élastiques par spectroscopie Brillouin. Nous apportons une description complète, théorique et expérimentale, des spectres Brillouin rétro-diffusés par les microfils, révélant ainsi l'existence de plusieurs familles d'ondes élastiques, telles que les ondes hybrides et surfacique, ainsi que de nombreux anti-croisements. En exploitant l'ensemble de ces propriétés élastiques, nous démontrons ensuite une technique de mesure optique, simple et non-destructive, du diamètre des microfils et de leur uniformité, avec une très grande précision et une sensibilité de quelques nanomètres, comparable aux techniques conventionnelles comme la microscopie par balayage électronique. Nous réalisons en supplément une cartographie des ondes élastiques le long des microfils optiques par la technique de corrélation Brillouin de phase. Une autre étude majeure de cette thèse a porté sur la dépendance du spectre Brillouin en fonction d'une déformation axiale des microfils optiques qui présentent une très grande élasticité et des coefficients de contraintes élevés. Pour la première fois à notre connaissance, nous avons observé l'effet des non-linéaritiés des constantes élastiques de la silice dans un microfil optique fortement déformé sur les coefficients de contraintes. L'ensemble de ces travaux représente une étude fondamentale du processus de diffusion Brillouin dans les microfils optiques et permet également d'ouvrir la voie aux développements de dispositifs photoniques compacts dans le domaine des capteurs et des télécommunications.
