Book The History of Money for Understanding Economics

Download or read book The History of Money for Understanding Economics written by Vincent Lannoye and published by Vincent Lannoye. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics, cornerstone of politics Examining politics demands understanding of economics, as the economy always influences and constrains governmental decision-making. And, money is the key to learning economics. If the monetary system is well understood, it will clarify seemingly impenetrable economic events. The History of Money for Understanding Economics is an indispensable reference to decrypt economics, and it does so in an enthralling way, from antiquity to the present day, with readily accessible language. This book answers the following questions: How did money appear? What precisely is a bank? After circulating for centuries, why did gold coins vanish? Is there anything behind the value of paper banknotes? What is inflation? What is the IMF? Is the US trade deficit sustainable? A monetary solution, rather than a political one This book joins other groundbreaking interpretations of history that have underscored the influence of the management of money. It explains how monetary changes have precipitated events from the fall of the Roman Empire to World War II and beyond. Given the historical significance of monetary changes, could a monetary breakthrough shake up the exasperating inequalities? Indeed, Lannoye challenges the reader with a monetary innovation to finance a parallel (and green!) economy which could foster a more equitable distribution of wealth.

Book Money in Motion

Download or read book Money in Motion written by Ghislain Deleplace and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In analyzing money, contemporary economics has focused its attention on money's function as a store of value, neglecting its role as medium of circulation. When circulation is put center stage, it becomes apparent that the supply of money does indeed adapt to the needs of trade - and does so in many different ways, often ways that are difficult for a central bank to control, because they reflect the responses of banks and other financial institutions to market incentives. But money's role in circulation must be coordinated with its store of value function, and both with finance. Failure here can lead to instability. The essays in this volume by internationally renowned economists cover these issues in original and contrasting analyses, presenting the American post-Keynesian perspective, on the one hand, and the point of view of the French Circulation School, on the other.

Book The Role of the State in Development Processes

Download or read book The Role of the State in Development Processes written by Claude Auroi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1992. Bringing together papers from analysts from every continent, edited by Claude Auroi, this collection offers insight into the state's role and the challenges in researching its development. The authors recognise the concerns among young nations focused on which type of state system would lead to an organised nation while acknowledging the two major symbols of discussion in the Western type of state and the Marxist state. They argue points of commonality and thus analyse the qualifying adjective of 'state' to suggest patterns and future discernments.

Book Controlling Credit

Download or read book Controlling Credit written by Eric Monnet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common wisdom that central banks in the postwar (1945–1970s) period were passive bureaucracies constrained by fixed-exchange rates and inflationist fiscal policies. This view is mostly retrospective and informed by US and UK experiences. This book tells a different story. Eric Monnet shows that the Banque de France was at the heart of the postwar financial system and economic planning, and that it contributed to economic growth by both stabilizing inflation and fostering direct lending to priority economic activities. Credit was institutionalized as a social and economic objective. Monetary policy and credit controls were conflated. He then broadens his analysis to other European countries and sheds light on the evolution of central banks and credit policy before the Monetary Union. This new understanding has important ramifications for today, since many emerging markets have central bank policies that are similar to Western Europe's in the decades of high growth.

Book London and Paris as International Financial Centres in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book London and Paris as International Financial Centres in the Twentieth Century written by Youssef Cassis and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-01-20 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London and Paris, the world's two leading financial centres in the nineteenth century, experienced differing fortunes during the twentieth century. While London remained an international financial centre, Paris' influence declined. Yet over the last twenty years deregulation, internationalization, and the advent of the single currency have reactivated their competition in ways reminiscent of their old rivalry before the First World War. This book provides a long-term perspective on the development of each centre, with special attention devoted to the pre-1914 years and to the last decades of the twentieth century, in order to contrast these two eras of globalization. The chapters include both archive-based and synthetic surveys and are written by the leading specialists of the field. This comparison between Europe's two leading capital cities will also provide new insights into two important subjects: the political economy of Britain and France in the twentieth century, and the history of international financial centres. As much as a comparison between London and Paris as international financial centres, this book is an Anglo-French comparison; in other words, it considers, through the prism of finance, several aspects of the two countries' economic, business, social, and political histories. It includes contributions from leading banking, financial, and economic historians, and will be of interest to academics, researchers, and students of Financial and Economic History, and the role of London and Paris in particular.
