L'idéal démocratique est né du rejet de la loi du plus fort et de la hiérarchie sociale au profit des principes d'égalité et de liberté. Incidemment, plusieurs études contemporaines ont démontré que la participation des citoyens dans l'élaboration des solutions aux problèmes de leur communauté comporte d'énormes avantages. Cependant, plusieurs défis restent à relever tel que la concrétisation de la participation afin que celle-ci ne demeure un simple leitmotiv, l'éducation politique citoyenne, réduire au minimum la politisation des groupements et association d'intérêts sociaux, ... C'est ainsi que l'objet du présent devoir porte sur l'état de la participation citoyenne dans la démocratie contemporaine. Mesurer la participation citoyenne implique de jeter un regard attentif sur divers aspects de la vie politique comme le taux de participation aux processus électoraux, le niveau de l'engagement social et de l'action militante, l'efficacité des différentes méthodes de participation publique, la compétence civique ainsi que le niveau de l'éthique sociale des citoyens. On doit également considérer l'influence qu'exercent les principaux acteurs de la scène publique que sont les politiciens et les médias puis se demander si l'espace décisionnel accordé aux citoyens est suffisant ou s'il n' y a pas lieu de l'élargir et de l'augmenter de façon significative. Enfin, il importe de jeter un regard attentif aux nouvelles formes de participations citoyennes élaborées et expérimentées depuis un certain nombre d'années déjà.

Originally designed by Republicans as a tool of citizenship learning and formation of political opinion through open debate, rallies gradually became a stage dedicated to the show of force, at the initiative of various emerging political formations. This distortion is marked by the turn of the twentieth century, but is observed even more in the rallies held between the two world wars. Faced with this transformation, the government does not hesitate, in the second half of the 1930s, to invalidate the liberal credo that based the right of assembly since the installation of the Republic. This book, at the crossroads of history and political science, is an important contribution to our understanding of political life of that period. An essential form of collective political participation, the rallies had never been the subject of major research. The author also contributes to the reflection, more relevant than ever, on the status of public debate in representative regimes. Participatory democracy has a history that this book helps to trace.

Many of the countries that are members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which are: Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia, have experienced political violence and bloodshed at one time or another. While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of ‘savage’ capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.

He identifies in particular three categories of change in the tempo of modern social life: technological acceleration, evident in transportation, communication, and production; the acceleration of social change, reflected in cultural knowledge, social institutions, and personal relationships; and acceleration in the pace of life, which happens despite the expectation that technological change should increase an individual's free time. According to Rosa, both the structural and cultural aspects of our institutions and practices are marked by the "shrinking of the present," a decreasing time period during which expectations based on past experience reliably match future results and events. When this phenomenon combines with technological acceleration and the increasing pace of life, time seems to flow ever faster, making our relationships to each other and the world fluid and problematic. It is as if we are standing on "slipping slopes," a steep social terrain that is itself in motion and in turn demands faster lives and technology. As Rosa deftly shows, this self-reinforcing feedback loop fundamentally determines the character of modern life.

What is the nature of social innovations? 2.What patterns can be identified in social innovations emerging at the local level? 3.How is the emergence and spread of social innovations related to urban governance? More precisely, which conditions and arrangements facilitate and hinders social innovation? We explore these questions using different types of data and methods, and studying different contexts. In particular, we focus on innovations that aim at solving problems of the young unemployed, single parents and migrants. This analysis is based on original research carried out in the period 2010-2013 in the framework of a European project with a specific empirical research strategy. Research was carried out in 20 cities in 10 different European countries.
