Aujourd'hui, bien qu'elle soit relativement jeune, elle est largement répandue à travers le monde entier. L'hygiéniste dentaire est un acteur majeur de prévention bucco-dentaire qui décharge le chirurgien-dentiste des actes les plus courants, et notamment des actes de prophylaxie bucco-dentaire. En France, la délégation de soins du chirurgien-dentiste est un problème qui n'a pas encore trouvé d'issue. En effet, la législation française n'autorise pas la délégation de soins du chirurgien-dentiste. Le statut des assistantes dentaires ou des infirmières diplômées d'Etat ne prévoit pas, à ce jour, d'évolution possible vers le statut d'hygiéniste dentaire. L'objectif de cette thèse est ainsi d'étudier la législation française concernant la délégation de soins du chirurgien-dentiste, tout en mettant en parallèle les exemples des pays voisins, afin de tirer les avantages et les inconvénients de la reconnaissance des hygiénistes dentaires en France. L'apparition de cette profession en France impliquerait de nombreux changements majeurs ; c'est pourquoi ce travail envisage une mise en perspective en abordant de façon plus précise les changements à apporter en termes de compétences et dans le cadre juridique.
