Book Women Artists in Paris 1850 1900

Download or read book Women Artists in Paris 1850 1900 written by Laurence Madeline and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paris was the epicenter of art during the latter half of the nineteenth century, luring artists from around the world with its academies, museums, salons, and galleries. Despite the city's cosmopolitanism and its cultural stature, Parisian society remained strikingly conservative, particularly with respect to gender. Nonetheless, many women painters chose to work and study in Paris at this time, overcoming immense obstacles to access the city's resources. 'Women Artists in Paris, 1850-1900' showcases the remarkable artistic production of women during this period of great cultural change, revealing the breadth and strength of their creative achievements. Guest Curator Laurence Madeline (Chief Curator at Musées d'art et d'histoire, Geneva) has selected close to seventy compelling paintings by women of varied nationalities, ranging from well-known artists such as Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, and Rosa Bonheur, to lesser-known figures such as Kitty Kielland, Louise Breslau, and Anna Ancher.

Book R criture Des Mythes

Download or read book R criture Des Mythes written by Joëlle Cauville and published by Editions Rodopi. This book was released on 1997 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Abundantly illustrated, this catalogue is a fascinating and comprehensive reevaluation of the French modernist sculptor Camille Claudel. Camille Claudel (1864–1943) was among the most daring and visionary sculptors of the late nineteenth century. Although much attention has been paid to her tumultuous life—her affair with her mentor, Auguste Rodin; the premature end to her career; her thirty-year institutionalization in an asylum—her art remains little known outside of France. Memorably praised by critic Octave Mirbeau in 1895 as “a revolt of nature: a woman of genius,” Claudel was celebrated for her brilliance during a time when women sculptors were rare. Featuring more than two hundred photographs along with contributions from leading experts, this publication accompanies the first comprehensive survey of Claudel’s oeuvre in nearly forty years. With essays exploring the many facets of her life, work, and reception; a biography; commentary by American sculptor Kiki Smith; and a fascinating appendix of documents written by Claudel and her contemporaries, this volume reevaluates the artist’s work on its own merits and repositions her legacy within a more complex genealogy of modernism. This volume, copublished with The Art Institute of Chicago, accompanies an exhibition on view at The Art Institute of Chicago from October 7, 2023, to February 19, 2024 and at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center from April 2 to July 21, 2024.

Book Staging and the Arts in Nineteenth Century France

Download or read book Staging and the Arts in Nineteenth Century France written by Camilla Murgia and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the mechanisms and patterns of staging in nineteenth-century France. Often associated with theatre and performance, staging also applies to visual arts. It is thoroughly embedded in a more general cultural development comprising the dissemination of knowledge, political awareness and consumerism. The notion of staging applies to a process of appearing, revealing and disappearing that puts forward new ways for the individual to be seen and to make the self (and the other) visible. Staging determines and questions the process of appearing and disappearing by generating connections and interactions between multiple layers of reality (i.e., artistic, theatrical, literary, and visual) – but according to what criteria, through what mechanisms and with what materials? What are the repercussions of staging, and, even more important, what does staging not show? This book argues that the notion of staging goes beyond interdisciplinarity. Looking at the different ways staging was used and conceived introduces new approaches to understanding visual culture in nineteenth-century France.

Book La D couverte de l le Frivole by Gabriel Fran ois Coyer

Download or read book La D couverte de l le Frivole by Gabriel Fran ois Coyer written by Jean-Alexandre Perras and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. La Découverte de l’île Frivole (1751) is presented as a supplement to George Anson’s Voyage Round the World, and recounts the adventures of the English admiral and his crew on a strange island whose inhabitants, the Frivolians, are devoted to fashion, hairstyles, novels, and fancy desserts. This tale is at once both playful and cynical and its biting irony spares neither the reputation of France nor that of England. It resonates with the most critical attacks by Jean-Jacques Rousseau against luxury and refinement, or those of Voltaire against his compatriots. This volume provides the first bilingual critical edition of a text that, in its time, caused a stir both in France and in England.

Book Culture as a Vocation

Download or read book Culture as a Vocation written by Vincent Dubois and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocational occupations are attractive not so much for their material rewards as for the prestige and self-fulfillment they confer. They require a strong personal commitment, which can be subjectively experienced in terms of passion and selflessness. The choice of a career in the cultural sector provides a good example of this. What are the terms of this calling? What predisposes individuals to answer it? What are the meanings of such a choice? To answer these questions, this book focuses on would-be cultural managers. By identifying their social patterns, by revealing the resources, expectations and visions of the world they invest in their choice, it sheds new light on these occupations. In these intermediary and indeterminate social positions, family heritages intersect with educational strategies, aspirations of upward mobility with tactics against downward mobility, and social critique with adjustment strategies. Ultimately the study of career choices in cultural management suggests a new take on the analysis of social reproduction and on the embodiment of the new spirit of capitalism. The empirical findings of this research conducted in France are set in a broader comparative perspective, at the European level and with the USA.

  • Author : Scott Allan

Download or read book Gustave Caillebotte written by Scott Allan and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2025-01-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated volume paints a complex portrait of Caillebotte, masculinity, and identity in late nineteenth-century France. More than any other French Impressionist, painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) observed and depicted the many men in his life, including his brothers and friends, employees, and the workers and bourgeois in his Parisian neighborhood. Male subjects feature prominently in some of his best-known works, such as The Floor Scrapers, Man at His Bath, Young Man at His Window, Boating Party, and Paris Street, Rainy Day. The originality of his paintings of men is fully explored for the first time in this catalogue, published to accompany a major international exhibition co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Musée d’Orsay, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Alongside paintings, drawings, and photographs, as well as an appendix featuring maps and new biographical research that sheds light on Caillebotte’s social network, this volume includes historically grounded thematic essays by curators and leading scholars. By exploring the complex and varied facets of Caillebotte’s identity—as son, brother, soldier, bachelor, amateur, sportsman, and so on—these essays pose questions of identity, leaving space for ambiguous and fluid expressions of gender and masculinity—for both Caillebotte and the larger late nineteenth-century French world. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the Musée d’Orsay from October 8, 2024, to January 19, 2025, J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center from March 25 to May 25, 2025, and The Art Institute of Chicago from June 29 to October 5, 2025.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Women and Visual Culture in Nineteenth century France 1800 1852

Download or read book Women and Visual Culture in Nineteenth century France 1800 1852 written by Gen Doy and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1998 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship of class, gender and race to visual culture in early nineteenth-century France. Drawing extensively on contemporary sources, the author looks at the work of women artists, women art critics and writers to demonstrate that many of the assumptions about female invisibility and objectification in bourgeois culture and society need serious reconsideration. The first half of the nineteenth century was a complex and contradictory period in the formation and contestation of bourgeois ideologies of 'the feminine'. Women, though at a serious disadvantage, became visible as artists, critics and patrons and were not merely invisible, domesticated or 'constructed' by forces outside their control. Women artists such as Angelique Mongez painted heroic neo-classical nudes, while many named (and anonymous) women wrote art criticism, articulating their views as female spectators. Doy also examines notions of 'appropriate' work for women in relation to landscape, genre, sculpture and the emergence of Realism. Of particular interest is the discussion of the representation of black women during this period, when Fren
