Book excerpt: The Cross of Jesus, by Father Louis Chardon, O.P. is a two-volume spiritual masterpiece from the seventeenth century. Published in 1647 after Father Chardon had spent many years as a theologian, master of novices and director of souls, this expert theologian explains the Christian's imitation of Christ and transformation in grace by faithfully suffering the crosses which constitute the active and passive purifications of the senses and spirit, leading the soul to consummate holiness. By considering the dark night of the spirit and the soul's progress in perfect charity and contemplation in the light of the mysteries of the Hypostatic Union in Our Lord Jesus Christ, the soul's incorporation into the Mystical Body of Christ, the life of Our Lady, the indwelling of the Holy Trinity and the sublime missions of the Divine Persons into the baptized soul in the state of grace, Father Chardon's work richly complements the writings of the Mystical Doctor, St. John of the Cross. Thus, he contemplates in the light of divine revelation and traditional Catholic doctrine the mysterious relation of ineffable divine peace and voluntarily-embraced suffering, a dynamic which is manifested supremely in the life and Passion of Our Lord and mirrored in a measure in the lives of His saints-as well as in the life of any interior soul striving towards the perfection of the transforming union. To bear and make satisfaction for sin and its terrible effects and to make reparation to God's perfect justice and infinite holiness, the incarnate Word, sent in the greatest mercy as man's Redeemer, was in His Soul ever inclined by His love for God and man towards suffering and the Cross. However, the privations and sufferings which He voluntarily embraced in His consuming love for His Bride, the Church, were means to the rich and complete union which God wills to effect with souls faithful to the Savior and His Cross. Guided by Father Chardon's masterful application of traditional Catholic doctrine, the devout soul can contemplate and adore the mysteries of grace in the Blessed Trinity, Our Lord and Our Lady and strive likewise to conform themselves, thus proceeding more generously and surely in the path of prayer, love and suffering that leads to the highest beatitude and union with the thrice holy God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This small and simple spiritual gem offers a profound contemplation of the Seven Last Words of Christ, with specific application to the seven sacraments he instituted. Adrienne von Speyr leads us to the foot of the Cross, where she gazes upon the crucified Christ and listens deeply as he cries out in suffering and opens the portals of divine grace. The Cross: Word and Sacrament will challenge and encourage the reader to participate more deeply in the Paschal Mystery through a greater appreciation and understanding of the sacraments and their source in the Cross. The words Jesus utters in his agony, as recorded in the Gospels, contain not only the gifts experienced in the sacraments of the Church but also questions: Do you truly understand what is being offered to you? Will you accept these gifts? Will you suffer the mystery contained in such love? In short, this book calls the reader to conversion, which is a continual process of turning toward the Son, who leads us, in union with the Holy Spirit, into an ever-deepening relationship with the Father. Thus is the reader invited to enter the very life of the Trinity, that communion of love without end.

Book The Cross of Jesus

Download or read book The Cross of Jesus written by Louis Chardon (O.P.) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Cross of Jesus, the chef-d'oeuvre of the seventeenth-century spiritual writer Louis Chardon, is a fruitful synthesis of theology and mysticism. In style, the book is richly oratorical, replete with prayers, admonishments, and interrogations of the Divine worthy of the Book of Job; in content, it is arrestingly original, combining medieval scholarship and modern sensibility. This new edition, under the deft editorial direction of Paul Jerome Keller, O.P., combines the two volumes of the original translation into one and includes a new Introduction, updated references, and revisions to the translation that better reflect the original French text. Its theologiclal assiduity notwithstanding, 'The Cross of Jesus' is a book, not for scholars, but for souls striving for sanctity. Similar to his saintly compatriots Jean Pierre de Caussade and Therese of Lisieux, Chardon is able to instill consolation and encouragement even amidst admonitions of stern truth. In 'The Cross of Jesus,' the result is an enduring, bracingly forthright meditation on the meaning of suffering, the mystery of Christ's death, and the accomplishment of our salvation." --

Excerpt: ... he not affirm, in this same Epistle to his dear son Timothy (i. 7), that God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power? This is why he declares (v. 8) that he (Timothy) ought not to Mush for his bonds, and be ashamed of his person, amidst the humiliations to which he was subjected. CHAPTER V. WE OUGHT TO LOVE CROSSES. Love follows on esteem; we love things in proportion; to the value we set upon them. I have just spoken of the worth of crosses, and this little work abounds in motives most capable of making us perceive their value and urging us to love them. But let me say, in one word, what may carry absolute conviction to the mind, as to the obligation that lies upon us of having a love for crosses. Jesus, God-Man, loved them: therefore they are lovable. He loved them with an ardour inconceivable: therefore they ought to be the objects of our greatest affection. Let men say what they will, though they should all unite together in persuading us to the contrary, we must adhere to the sentiments of a God. All men may be deceived; a God can neither be deceived nor deceive others. They who follow Him walk in the light and in the truth;, every other path leads astray and is full of darkness. The Adorable Jesus, our God, loved sufferings. They were His treasure, His joy, His glory, His sweetness, the delight of His heart, His love. Heespouses the Cross at His first entrance into the world: this is why He is the Man of Sorrows; He never quits it, He lives on it, He dies on it. You would say that He has not words choice enough to express His affection for it. He is not content with saying that He desires it, but He declares (Luke xxii. 15) that He desires it with desire; that is to say, with a desire which angels and men ought to...

Book The Holy Ways of the Cross Or a Short Treatise on the Various Trials and Afflictions Interior and Exterior to Which the Spiritual Life Is Subject

Download or read book The Holy Ways of the Cross Or a Short Treatise on the Various Trials and Afflictions Interior and Exterior to Which the Spiritual Life Is Subject written by Henri Marie Boudon and published by St Athanasius Press. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the present darkness and distress this little book may help to minister consolation and inspire drooping hearts with courage, by reminding them that suffering is the Church's heritage, the very condition of her well-being, nay, her highest privilege, inasmuch as it renders her most like to her Divine Spouse and is the pledge and surety of her triumphs. As of the Lord Himself (Luke 24:26), so of His Church it may be truly said that she ought to suffer these things and so to enter into her glory. Her most signal successes have been preceded, and indeed attended, by humiliations and apparent failures, and have been accomplished, like all the great designs of God, under the heavy weight of the Cross. It is not, however, of exterior trials and sufferings that the author principally treats, or of those obvious temptations to which all Christians are exposed, but of those deep interior miseries, those subtle devices of self-love, those illusions and preternatural assaults of the evil one, which, in some form or other, they must be prepared to encounter who strive to pursue the arduous paths of spiritual perfection. And if testimony were wanted to the high character and the great practical usefulness of the work, it might be sufficient to cite the words of the doctors in theology who were commissioned to examine and report upon its contents previous to its publication in the year 1671. From the terms in which their approbation is couched, it will be seen that the doctrine which the treatise enforces, as it is necessary for all times, so is particularly applicable to our own, when men who profess to represent the highest intellects of this boasted age of progress are inviting Christian people to exchange the truths of divine faith and the life-giving lessons of the Cross for the base, uncertain tenets of a sensual philosophy and of a false and godless science. " It is a book," say they, " as full of instruction for souls which desire to rise to perfection as for those whose office it is to direct them on their way. We have found in it a teaching all divine, which the light of faith alone is capable of rendering intelligible to those who read it, and which divine love alone can enable them to relish. It is a knowledge which God hides from worldlings who allow themselves to be guided by their senses, and from men of mundane policy who regulate their actions by the sole light of human reason. This science of the Cross, unhappily, is ignored, neglected, or despised by the greater part of men, comprising even a number of the learned, who, devoting all their life to the study of the speculative sciences, pay no regard to the science and the maxims of Jesus Crucified, ' in whom' nevertheless ' are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge' (Col. 2:3). It may be hoped," they add, " that the reading of this book will inspire those who peruse it with the desire of dying wholly to themselves and following Jesus Christ, seeing that it is replete with the unction of the Spirit of God."
