The book documents a diversity of research approaches to examining the regional determinants of entrepreneurship in countries as contrasting as India and Sweden. The Editors call is for scholars to better understand the long run factors that influence enterprise at the local and regional level. For policy makers the Editors challenge is for them to be much clearer about the targets for their policies. Is it new firms, new jobs, productivity and does it matter where these targets are delivered? This book was published as a special issue of Regional Studies.

Book excerpt: This book examines the emergence of different forms of capitalism in Central-Eastern states in Europe and Mekong states within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). All of them (but Thailand) have historically disappeared from the regional maps for long periods of time due to colonial or imperial rule. Most of them were previously members of a soviet-type economy, and they all joined ASEAN or the European Union in the 1990s or in the 2000s. These states are characterized by a strong urge toward feelings of national sovereignty due to their experiences with colonialism and imperialism. But, due to the regional economic pressures and the globalization dynamic, these states cannot articulate protectionist policies. They are forced to open their economies in order to attract Foreign Direct Investments. This results in less regulated and more political forms of capitalism than in some more developed capitalist countries. This book analyzes forms of capitalism as the arising from a combination of three conditions: the legacy of the foreign occupations, the national construction process of the sovereign state, and lastly, the dynamics of regional integration. These states' claims to national sovereignty and the manner in which they developed suggests a causative link between the forms of political domination that have presided over these transformations and the forms of capitalism that have resulted.

Die Auseinandersetzung über die Harmonisierung von Arbeitnehmerrechten ist durch konkurrierende nationale Traditionen geprägt. Die hier vorgestellten ausgewählten Länderstudien belegen, dass der Trend in Richtung rein gewerkschaftlicher Interessenvertretungen geht. Gerät damit das britische und nicht das deutsche Modell zum Orientierungspunkt einer Ausgestaltung des «sozialen Dialogs» in Europa? Der vorliegende Band, der Beiträge von Arbeitsrechtlern, Sozialwissenschaftlern sowie von Vertretern von Unternehmerverbänden und Gewerkschaften enthält, soll Orientierungspunkte für die Beantwortung dieser Frage liefern. Les directives européennes, qui respectent les traditions des Etats-membres d'Europe occidentale, doivent servir, dans le cadre de l'élargissement de l'UE, à garantir des standards minimaux en droit social dans les pays nouvellement intégrés, notamment en accordant des droits d'information et de consultation aux salariés. Cela conduit-il au transfert d'un certain type de « modèle européen » de participation des salariés aux processus décisionnels des entreprises ? Or, il n'existe pas en la matière de modèle unique en Europe de l'Ouest. La discussion relative à l'harmonisation des droits des salariés en Europe est donc marquée par l'existence parallèle de différentes traditions nationales. Les études présentées dans cet ouvrage révèlent que la tendance est aux systèmes de représentation d'émanation syndicale. Ne serait-ce donc pas plutôt le système britannique que le système allemand qui servirait désormais de référence dans l'élaboration d'un « dialogue social » en Europe ? Des spécialistes du droit du travail et des sciences sociales ainsi que des représentants d'organisations patronales et syndicales, proposent ici des points de repère pour analyser ce phénomène.
